Have you ever been in your city archive?
I had no idea, what it was like, until I didn't go there with my son some days ago.
It was a free excursion that was organised by the city kids library, and I was glad we had a chance to see a new interesting place where there was no free access to people.
I supposed it would be interesting for me but I wasn't sure my son would like this excursion - the archive isn't a very interesting place for kids, yeah?
I was mistaken!! He was involved into the excursion from the first minutes! The woman led us from one hall to another, showed us great rooms where millions of documents are kept, told us about definite rules and conditions of their keeping. It is a real science!! That's why they still keep some docs that are more than 100 years old!! And they still look good!
Moreover, the archive isn't only a place for keeping docs but also a place where they can be restorated, and it's a real science too! It's a very co,plicated and long process that require a lot of attention and skills, just like restoration of world art masterpieces!
it's the most expensive scanner for docs in the country! it costs more than 1,000,000 rubles, and only 2 cities have them in the whole region.
We were full of emotions and impressions walking there and feeling the air of history there..
In the end my son said that he wanted to be an archive worker now:))) It's a great sign he really liked this place!
And it's great now he has an idea what it is, and how it works.
To be honest, I had no idea about it, and I'm glad I visited it too;)
I don't even know if my city has an archive (I guess logically it may do?!). I remember being spun out by this massive book from the 70s at my workplace that contained minutes from meetings (usually glued into the book though a couple had come loose), being surrounded on all sides by old documents would be something.
With that stupidly expensive scanner I'm guessing the documents are being digitised before they dust?
Glad your son enjoyed the excursion so much! One of the best things about homeschooling is learning right alongside them isn't it XD
yeah, the scanner makes digitalization of paper docs. Thus they keep a copy of them for the case if something happens with the original ones.
Unschooling opens much more doors;) At school we had NO excursions at all
Oh wow O_O a lot of the schools here do excursions as we used to semi-regularly see school groups out and about when we were roaming. I don't know how often though. I know the kids generally find it much more fun than being in school and some of the parents were grumpy about it because it's permission slips and additional costs and some parents even thought that it was a waste of time because they refuse to believe that learning can possibly happen anywhere other than in a classroom.
when I was a schoolgirl, we had some classes outside school, we went to the beach with our teacher (I remember 1-2 of such events). Now it happens very rare only in the first 3 classes and not in all schools. Private schools make lessons more interesting, so there kids really have better education but parents should pay for it, and it's possible not for all families.

I would have loved to see this! I'm pretty sure is have had the same response as your son and want to work there. I wonder what qualifications you'd need for that kind of work
I think it's just a question of experience. I haven't ever seen about special education for this kind of work. If you work with restoration of docs, you must have definite skills, but they are given during courses and education before the start of working there (I think so). They have very low salaries there. Very low! Like many budget workers, so I think they are glad to have any workers, and they are ready to teach them by themselves. It requires lots of attention and carefullness, but I think it's possible to get necessary skills rather fast.
That's actually a fantastic opportunity if you enjoy the work.
yeah but good salary is important for a good life too. If you are a woman with a husband who earn good money, you can work there just for your wish, but if you are a man who has to feed his family, it's impossible so low salary;( so almost no men work there..
I am woefully unfamiliar with Crimean history, but I know enough to be sure that there are stories that would thrill most children in such an archive there.
Thanks!
oh thank you! It was a big surprise that not only historical docs are saved there, but actually any docs about ALL citizens of Kerch in the period of 75 years! You can find info of workplaces, salary and other life data about all citizens! For example, when a person stops working and go on pension, he makes a request to the archive to get data about all his workplaces to be sure his pension will be counted right.
