In the previous months, I couldn't put away the feeling that there was a lot of talk about how to change Hive. There was the discussion about the interest rates on HBD, then there was the discussion about the DHF that should have better checks and be more efficient. Then we had the story of taking away the reward pool on the first layer. Then there was the problematic of some Hive-Engine nodes that weren't working properly.
Ideas for changes can be perceived as decisions
I believe that it is important that we talk about the things that can be improved and I like the fact that these discussions are taking place. We shouldn't forget however that a lot of people don't understand the difference between a discussion on a topic and the real decisions regarding it. Let's not forget that we are working in decentralized framework where it's difficult to discern who takes decisions.
For some people, if we talk about interests on HBD, they already see their income from their savings going away. If we talk about taking the rewards away from the first layer, they already see their business model in danger. If some nodes don't work well and they follow the discussions on discord, Hive suddenly seems full of scams and not trustworthy infrastructure.
On one side I feel it's important to talk about the things that could be improved on hive, on the other side we should also take care not to come up with ideas that might scare people off.
Hive doesn't need to reinvent itself. It should rather offer a stable framework to build upon
If we want dapps to come to hive, people to invest or build businesses, the most important thing that we should provide is planning security. You can't build a business or an app if you don't know whether the metrics will suddenly change. We have something that is by far not perfect but it's much better than many other things that I have seen. Trying to change it or simply giving tons of ideas how to change it only brings insecurity and instability. If I was a business that wants to use Hive or an app developer that wants to develop on hive, I need to know that what I do will still be possible in one, two or five years.
A business needs to know that things won't change
If I was in the shoes of a business that was looking for the best blockchain for its product, I would be scared off by discussions about changing the key metrics of the ecosystem. Even if these discussions have nothing to do with the real decisions. People can't build a business without being sure that they have the security that things will remain as they are.
I believe that we should stop pointing out all the stuff that is not perfect on Hive. We should point our energy towards what we can built with the infrastructure the way it is. If people are not happy with how the DHF works, why not create a 2nd layer solution with another DAO? If some people have the idea to take rewards of the 1st layer, why not first build a second layer that could take over things? If people are not happy with hive-engine, why not build something better or support the HE team?
Hive will grow if we manage to bring value to the blockchain from the inside
I believe that hive is really a great blockchain that offers things that few others can. We don't really need to market hive to the outside, we need to improve it from the inside. When Splinterlands took off, why did so many people sign up with Splinterlands? The people were attracted by the income possibilities of the game. Splinterlands didn't do much marketing. When something works well and provides value, people will come by themselves. We should make sure that people can earn good money when they create content on hive, they should be able to earn while playing games or doing other stuff. The more income opportunities are offered, the more people will come.
To bring people to hive we need to provide value and make the blockchain even better than it already is with more apps, more services, more solutions but not by changing things that are working pretty well...

What do say to those that believe 20% rate on HBD is to high and looks like a scam to people outside of hive.
to give it a try :P Most likely if someone believes that the 20% rate is a scam, he/she will also believe that Hive in general is a scam and that you can't earn at all. If it's a random person we can't do much about it, we need better marketing and ways to educate them.
If it's a friend of yours or family, then it may be easier to convince him/her, and show him some monthly stats and graphs that exist showing that people actually earn per month. Also, they can start with a small amount even 1$ and see each month or even each day their earnings. Even if let's say the rate drops to 15% or 10% or even to 0% still nobody will lose their initial investment. Only if something goes completely wrong then not only HBD but Hive in general will get dumped, which is the usual risk anyone faces with any kind of investment. They can also simply hold hive and earn %2.9-3% APR!
I would say that there are as many opinions about it as there are users on hive. I think that the best way of dealing with it is that people vote for the witnesses that show the rate that seems appropriate to them.
Well said Achim, layer 1 is foundational and sudden big changes will scare away dapps that want a stable foundation to build on top of, and as to the Hive rewards pool the APR on that is steadily decreasing anyways and will level off at 2% if I remember corectly.

When people always come up with new ideas of what could be finetuned, they kind of miss the point. Discussing or implementing such changes won't bring new users. Value will bring new users and this can only be provided with more and better services and better rewards for people.

Those are some great points. We all have an equal opportunity to inflict change and take action instead of waiting for others to do the change you would like to see. Also, trying to focus on the positives instead of negatives are good things to try and do too.
I think that this was a bit lacking in the past months all around hive. We need another mentality that is centered on building and developping.
Stability is definitely something that all businesses need. However, if a change at some particular point is glaringly needed, then it should be made. (I'm not referring to anything in particular btw, just speaking generally 🤣)
Not everything is perfect on Hive, I totally agree on that and I would make some changes. However, I believe that putting everything into question isn't the solution either. I believe it's rather part of the problem. Onboarding and retention will work better in a stable environment.
i believe that some changes are needed because it can be proved fatal and attract the "wrong people". One example is the DHF. We literally have people taking advantage of the current state, earning tons of money, money other user could earn or spend on something more beneficial for the community while doing nothing or offering something that is actually beneficial. Also, some people who have the same mindset will see this as an opportunity to earn some money.
At the same time i don't see any issues with the interest rate of HBD, and it's not just my logic, if you see posts from people who actually know about economics and statistics can prove why this is the case. On the contrary, more people will be attracted to that kind of rate!
All in all, we i believe that what Hive needs is better marketing and to attract the "right people" meaning not only people who will create a posts, but builders who will create beneficial dapps for the community, and games that will attract even more people. Also, investors who may simply want to earn a passive income.
I totally agree with you about the DHF. In the minimum, there should be some check and balances and some accountability. I think that what hive needs most is apps that are working well, services that offer opportunities and ways to earn. With the infrastructure that we have at the moment, I believe that external marketing is useless. As long as people don't see by themselves that they need to be on hive, they won't stay in my opinion.
What builder or investors need is a stable blockchain, where people are not talking about implementing new changes every week. They need to be able to plan in the long term.

I agree with you, Hive has great potential and it is important to focus on improving it internally. If we can provide more revenue opportunities for users, we will surely attract more people. As we saw with Splinterlands, when there are revenue opportunities and value is offered, people will sign up on their own. I agree. We need a more stable ecosystem because they will leave if things stop working. I also agree that we need more things to keep people here and that means more applications.
We need more applications and for them to emerge, designers and coders need to know how the blockchain will evolve. If they can't be sure about basic metrics, they probably won't take any risk and build somewhere else.

I buy into the idea of not trying to give scamers much information on areas to exploit as you place more emphasis on what to change on Hive, instead, it will be better to develop the needed project that will later seamlessly replace the previous ones that are not working as expected.

Great thoughts friend. I believe that we should focus more on things to improve on hive rather than changes that may end up sending bad signals to investors and users alike.
Too many changes can be contraproductive in the long term because they take away the sound basis for a business to start building.
That's a truism.

If people go into business thinking things won't change, i am not sure business is the right place for them to be, change and death are the only thing we can guarantee in life.
Being adaptable and overcoming challenges is part of life and business.
For my part i am building a physical business on Hive as well as online activities. We will be accepting HBD as payment and will be offering an incentive to encourage customers to use Hive as what it is a digital wallet and payment option.
The business sells firewood, we have our products in shops as well so that will be an opportunity to maybe encourage other businesses to do the same.
