How Hive curation works these days

in #hive10 days ago

Guess I was gonna post something today after all - darn should've gotten this out before my appreciation post earlier to get the bigger autovotes! argh :p

Anyway, noticed a lot of people, newer or older hivers, may still be confused about how curation works, what may penalize your voting returns or increase them, etc.

Ended up being quite a long impromptu video, but let me know what you think and if maybe I said something that may not be completely correct as well - who knows, been here for so long some things maybe didn't update with the latest hardfork.

Also if you follow me on youtube as well, feel free to copy your comment from here over there and I'll give you a bigger vote as thanks as it may help get my video more reach there!

Sort:

The good thing for the author of a post is that they tend to not get penalised (unless its at the very end of the pending reward cycle) - so overwhelmingly, if you like content, I'd say there's no disincentive to not support it, no matter when it your vote occurs in the seven days.

I still feel that the function of HIVE itself needs to do more to reward "evergreen" content. I know that hodl hive and curating other authors is kind of a way to do this, but not everyone has the best intentions and can tend to use nepotism, rarely going outside of their circle.

I'm thinking out loud here, but would be cool to have some function on nodes / witnesses to see what posts are called (ie viewed or rendered) the most for a given quarter, then have some funding set aside from the DHF to reward evergreen content, provided the author has remained active on the platform in some way or another.

The hard thing about that is that views can be faked if there's rewards to be had. Something we've mentioned often now that the current frontends with view counters like ecency and peakd only really verify the traffic if there's proof it was shared somewhere (for example redditposh), other than that they're so easy to game. It'd need a proper way to mitigate that as to reward those getting traffic still on older posts.

Then again we could also have adrenenue for evergreen content later when we have more users. Currently there is a way to earn rewards for old posts through redditposh as well since authors get 20% of the comment rewards if the share does well on reddit - no matter how old the post is. Only restriction is that one user can only share a certain post once, so it'll have to be a new user sharing the same post again later for the author to earn some additional rewards for it.

Views can certainly be faked, but old-web tech has a few algos that stop unsophisticated F5 spam attacks (ie, clicking on your competitor's links to drain their adspend budget) - but I guess with enough knowledge and resources, any view based thing can overcome with a network of VPNs, random timing and other stuff if someone us unemployed enough (or ... dedicated?) enough to derive the best way to extract value.

Ad revenue would be good, but having ads on a platform that are platform derived (even how YouTube works) prevents the author (without giving them the right tools - which I know YouTube has) to preference that they don't want say, political advertisers, or gambling ads, or whatever segment they don't want on their content.

Or they could be a filthy capitalist with no ethics and just take money from anyone who is willing to pay. Like the classic irony of someone uploading a video about a car they hate and that doesn't work, and the ad on the video being for the make / model of car they're ranting about. The advertiser wouldn't like that - and... well, the owner of the video might find a delicious irony in it, but yeah, I'm rambling now.

I usually vote within a day, so no down side of that as you explained.

Did not know about the advanced feature to see the vote impact, learning never ends. The reward shown in a post is number of hive or the dollar amount of hive ? So if its shown as 10, then is it 10$ worth of hive or 10 hive ?

One other thing, we get 50% as part of curation, but I still can't relate it to Curation APR, which is currenlty 8.85% as per hivestats. Peakd says, it can go till 10%, may be explain APR in terms of figures ?

By the way the background music fits nicely.

8.5% is the average I suppose, if you scroll down more you can see each of your votes efficiency percentage. 100% means you're getting your full vote back based on your vote strength and stake, if it's lower than 100% then late voting or downvotes may have affected it, if it's higher then someone else may have voted it late boosting your early voting.

Not sure what you mean by figures. There's something like 900k hive going out as inflation on a weekly basis I believe, 15% to witnesses, 10% to DHF, 50% to author rewards and 50% to curation. There's something like 190 million hive staked so depending on how much you have compared to the 190m, that's the pull you have on directing inflation towards posts with votes and the amount you receive in curation rewards. I.e. if you have 100k HP, it's 100k out of 19M (if all 19M are actively voting and not sitting at 100% voting mana) and then an odd 30-35% of the 900k weekly hive along hbd going out.

There's a lot of factors as you can see but as long as you vote within the first 24 hours and the posts you upvote don't get downvoted you're pretty much getting as much returns as you can at the current inflation rate.

Thank you for explaining it in details, not easy to understand, the simple rule of voting withing 24 hrs is best. I wonder why someone would vote late....

Ah no stream today that was in a good time when you made this post 😂

That video is very helpful, actually the dust threshold (explained in an other video) is something that has made me waste so much vote mana... now i have learn the lesson and just drop a 1-3% when i cant pass the threshold so the author knows i have read it, a sort of feedback...

You opened me a world with the advanced mode on peakd vote tab, i always kept to basic, but its SUPER useful in advanced! The 24h window kinda promotes vote rush tough, it should be a bit longer imho

Yeah yeah yeah I know how it works.

75/25 curation and I vote at 5 minutes

lol

I’ve just not seen this post and let me tell you it’s so helpful!! Thank you for sharing the knowledge and working towards better Hive :)!

I've added this to my watch later list so I can take a look tomorrow. It's been a while since I revised my understanding of how curation works.

Cool thanks for this video. I thought the frontrunning thing was still active since my efficiency varies from 60-120%. Good to know it only applies now to late votes.

I'm sure there's a lot of frontrunners who had no clue it made no difference. So, this was needed.

Ohh so that’s why some of my votes feel like they return less 😳 thanks for pointing that out! I’ve been wondering if I was just imagining it haha. Following you on YT now too

So that's what was going on with certain accounts. You explained it well with the examples.

Greetings, here supporting your content on YouTube and learning about the curation process on Hive

Great explanation! I think you covered everything.

If it were in your power, which changes would you make in the curation?

I think I'd increase the penalty window to 2 or 3 days as often it may take a bit longer as curators/curation project to find underrewarded posts or in some cases you wanna let them mature to see how well they're doing on their own in terms of engagement before deciding how much you want to reward the author rather than send things to trending which we have enough stake and people already focusing on (and some times many blind/auto/trail votes. So potentially no penalty first 2-3 days, then a similar one for the other half of the week.

Other than that I can't really think of any other improvements that wouldn't require non-on-chain solutions like some sort of verification.

Agreed. A year and a half ago, I wrote a post about that.

ah yea, nice!

will copypaste this comment over to youtube as well xD

What if those accounts were newbies verified onboarded at real events by reputed hiveans, with evidence on chain??.....

This tech is basically already working... we jsut need a follow account and a way for the hivean to sign to say it was them who onboarded the new user at a live event....

stay tuned.

Thanks for explaining the curation system

I followed you in YouTube.

Hey @ranajoy15, here is a little bit of BEER from @isnochys for you. Enjoy it!

If you like BEER and want to support us please consider voting @louis.witness on HIVE and on HIVE Engine.

Very well explained, thank you

Summary

  • I think this is what you said, please correct any errors.

These things effect your curation reward. Your basis is about 50% of what your vote value is in Hive.

When you vote

  • Early voting; This used to give you more curation rewards, but it doesn't.
  • Late voting: Your curation rewards decrease if you vote after 24 hours. And every day, every 24 hours, your curation percentage goes down.
  • Voting within 12 hours of payoff will cause you to lose 80% of your curation reward.

Downvotes

  • These reduce everyones curation rewards.

Decline Payouts

  • This reduces author and curator rewards to zero

Rewards donated to Hive DAO or DHL.

  • Author rewards go to reward pool, but people who upvote the post still get curation rewards.

That’s a very informative post about curation and its reward. I didn’t know about the 24hours rule and most times I just get to vote anytime even when the post is almost paying out. We learn everyday and I’ve learnt alot from the video. Thanks for sharing

Hey bro, there are no Spanish subtitles. I read the comments and I know what they're talking about. I've always voted regardless of whether it's more than 24 hours old. I found out that the healing value varies.

can you try auto-translating the subtitles in the video settings? that should work

I've solved it, my friend. It was my signal. But it's solved. I'll be supporting you on YouTube with or without subtitles. Thanks.

I already fixed it, thank you very much for your time in responding, very grateful

Very well, these are things new users should know. And of course, the importance of accumulating HP is implicit so that your vote is visible, has value, and returns dividends to you as well. There's a part where he mentions the dust threshold. These are votes so small that they're neither visible nor return profits on their own, but rather cumulatively. Accumulating HP shows commitment to the blockchain but also to yourself; it's looking toward the future. Hive could surpass its all-time high, right? Do you know what it was?

Deleted.

dude, can u at least leave a comment before advertising a random unrelated thing of yours?

and in large font? shameless
