Inkito Update - New comic reader prototype

in #hive3 years ago

Hello friends,

Long time no see.
I'm happy to be back with some interesting news. I have continued my quest to redesign the Inkito website, starting with the reader.

Over the summer I've taken the time to finally apply the design shared in the previous project blog.

Here is the result:

Here you can see I opted to the top and bottom menu instead of just bottom one as planned. This allowed more space for the voting section.

I quite like the archive feature to visualize upcoming pages and swap between them. This will require image optimization for long series.

Finding the right input plugin took me a while. I did want a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor but also keeping the Markdown features that are used a lot in Hive.

Also I didn't want a preview page as I don't find it very convenient...

Here is the spread reading mode and the white background mode. A default background color could suggested by the creator but it could also be saved in the user preferences.

Please keep in mind this is not optimized for mobile as those devices will have a different interface. Also I removed any interaction with the blockchain for testing purposes.

It's still a work in progress, and did notice some format issues with content from other creators but I'll sort this out going forward.

I'd love to have your feedback on this first iteration. Any ideas to make it look more professional? Inkito has a discord server now if you want to throw ideas around.

Next up, I'll work on the mobile version. I'll hit you up soon with some more content. I have scheduled daily development time on Inkito so things should be moving faster.

Thanks for passing by.

See you on the other side,

Jrej

Looking better and better. It's just like the other webtoon sites I go to. Hope you keep working on this.

Hehe that's great to hear. I tried to look around at what other comic readers were doing. I liked a lot what Comixology was doing with the page turns. I like that it's closer to the comic reading experience.

I still included vertical scroll such as Webtoons or Tapas which is usually how I read webcomics.

This is cool. I think the interface looks pretty slick as is, but if you want improvement advice I'd say one thing is change the font weight to match the thickness of the icons. And maybe add something like fullPage.js? Really cool library for making full page divs that auto scroll to fit the page.

Oouh thanks a lot for the input. I hadn't realised for the font weight. I guess full screen is a must too. I've seen this feature on other online readers. Do you use it a lot? I tend to press F11 to go full screen...

I don't know if full screen is a must, but if you play around with fullpage.js you'll see what I mean. It's just pretty slick. Although I'm sure you could do the same thing without it with some manual coding. Fullpage.js actually isn't the same thing as going fullscreen with F11, it's just a library that makes divs that fill the browser window whether it's full screen or not, and auto scroll to fit perfectly. I guess it's easier to understand if you check it out here https://alvarotrigo.com/fullPage

Is is possible to put more stuff at the sides so the actual comic can use more of the height of the screen? Most comics are in portrait mode, but computer screens tend to be landscape. Just a thought.

!PIZZA

That's a good point.

The screen does get a little crowded with the menu toggled on. I'll work on a design with a side menu. I think it could look very cool. I could have both alternatives and let users choose.

The only challenge I can think of is displaying the comic title. I'm not sure it would fit in a sidebar. Depends on the title, I guess...

@inkito! I sent you a slice of $PIZZA on behalf of @steevc.

So is this your site with your drawings? I'm always looking for illustrators for possible future collabs.

Hey nice to meet you cryptogee.

This project would actually be a front end for Hive but to display webcomics better. It would host my comics but hopefully some from other creators.

I had done a little index for art I posted on Hive because I know it can be hard to dig through all the content. Otherwise I have an NFT collection with some of my best stuff. I hope to post some more over there going forward. ;-)
