Making Stuff Happen On Your Own

For those of you that converse with me, a frequent theme of mine is the critical need to build a middle class on Hive (previously STEEM). Though the situation has improved, the middle class is still relatively anemic.

People are going to look out for their own best interests, and there's nothing wrong with that. As it stands now, the distribution still skews way too far in the massive stakeholder direction, even without the dev fund from Steemit, which is essentially nullified on hive. This means the decisions for witnesses and proposals can be decided by a small subset of whales. This is especially true for whales who vote on proposals but do not vote on the return proposal.

Sure I could just complain for the sake of complaining, as many do, but as an engineer by trade, I like to create solutions as well.

My Plan

One thing I can do, is find an active minnow on the blockchain, and decide to help them become a dolphin. I want a million dolphins voting based upon their own best interests. I know without a doubt the interests of a million dolphins WILL NOT always align with that of a few whales, and that's a good thing. We need more independent voices with stake.

So I'm going to use what little influence I have to build up one worthy potential dolphin at a time, and I invite you to do the same.

My Choice

For my first victim, I've chosen @justinparke. I have already made a couple posts where I've set him as the beneficiary. This particular post he's 100% beneficiary. Justin is a positive and enthusiastic Hiver, and has an interesting story. He is about half way to dolphin, so he's off to a great start. I encourage you to follow him, vote him, and if you want to get aggressive, set him as beneficiary on some posts.

A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats!

Sort:

I saw a comment of yours on about post, mentioning the need for a middle class and meant to ask you what level you were looking at as that. Now I know! 😆

A good choice, with a whole family making strides on here too. 😁

I think the middle class can occupy a fairly wide range 5k-500k if you look at it relative to the top 20 or so SP holders, and combine that with their actual voting behavior.

I'll hold off on upvoting because that would be self-serving, but don't know how to thank you brother. This whole family lives, eats and sleeps Hive these days. Conversations at the breakfast table generally revolve around what we are going to post today.

On a sidenote, I've dipped my feet into the Hive Communities world and created my own Hive Community, the ASEAN Hive Community, for Southeast Asian-related content on Hive.

@Sreypov has shared a lot of her posts on her Facebook timeline, and now we have tons of Cambodian friends wanting to get in on the Hive action. It seemed best to have a place for them to go, but no sense in making a Cambodian Hive Community just yet, the userbase just isn't quite there.

We cast a wide and included all SE Asian countries, and hope this will be a more effective strategy.

Gonna share your post with the family, they will be overjoyed. Who knows, with the way @KidSisters is getting upvoted she may dolphin-ize before @Sreypov and I.

Bless up yourself @joshman. Who knows, if we ever get permission to come the USA, would be nice to link up in a non-digital way, but until such time, Hive on my friend.

Just vote it bro! You're welcome.

I want a million dolphins voting based upon their own best interests. I know without a doubt the interests of a million dolphins WILL NOT always align with that of a few whales, and that's a good thing. We need more independent voices with stake.

True that 👍

I think; my plan is simple. I just give 5000 HP delegation to a couple of people. I recently did it to two individuals on a rotational basis; @linco and @zayedsakib. I have another person in mind. As soon as the EL delegation returns next month I will act towards it.

It was the nicest thing ever! And the eve of Eid made it even better and special.

I took this as an opportunity to grow possibly as much as I can and so I've been pushing myself harder and harder (No pun intended). Joking aside, nowadays, my only ambition is to rise up to such a position in our community from where I would be able to help out deserving authors, like you did for me. Specially Bengali authors.

Thanks!! @azircon. Honestly, I'm having difficulties finding the right words to express my appreciation. So, thank you and I wish you good health.

Sweet, I gave Justin a follow and some upvotes.

Apprecialoved @hivetrending! Nice to make your acquaintance.

Awesome, thanks!

Oh wow, that's such a great idea! Both helping that person get a little bit more recognition, as well as rewards most probably he deserved on his posts but never had them. I love this!

Thanks! I'm glad you think so.

Amazing way to help Josh!

Appreciate the support!

This is great initiative. I wish you and the beneficiaries well.

Much appreciated!

This means the decisions for witnesses and proposals can be decided by a small subset of whales.

The same is true also to witness votes. But we can change this(especially with the help of independent users ranging from 5k HP to 20k HP or even below 5k with strong voices). By pooling their stake to one single account(manage by the users themselves) and proxied their voting rights to elect new sets of top witnesses on a monthly or weekly basis. We need to make them more active by putting them back and forth to the rankings.

Yes, the smaller holders need to pool their influence. Thanks for your input!

Buenas noche amigo deseo que se encuentre bien al igual que su familia amigo. Bonito delfín . Que tengas una excelente noche amigo.

Gracias amigo. ¡Nacerá un delfín!

Gracias amigo, espero que tú y tu familia estén bien.

I think someone should adopt me soon. ;)

Fun apart, what a cool idea! Now it's time to see actually how many whales are interested in following this.

You read my mind. I was considering a post about just this subject. It's easy to see on a successful post. There are a few votes that make up the majority of the post value and a great majority of dust votes. There are a few in the middle as well, but not nearly enough.

Glad you covered the topic cause I don't have the engineer's angle. But when I'm a dolphin, I'll have to take on a minnow. 👍

Well, by that logic, as a minnow I should find a Redfish to support and boost to 500HP. I have a few people in mind, it's a good concept @joshman has cooked up.

Haha. We'll have plankton helping amebas before we know it! 🤣🤣

Who's gonna clean up the microplastic though?

We need to collect it all and throw it into Chernobyl. But what will we collect it with? It's so small. If we ever run out of problems we'll no longer need solutions. That's no fun.

That is generous of you.
If people like you of 50 can also be doing this, dolphins level will be on the increase on hive.

I celebrated you

I hope so, thanks!

So, we are moving past @tenkminnows and going for dolphins now?

I think the two are complimentary. I @tenkminnows focuses on getting people enough resources to start out, so the bar is much lower. This is for more established folk to give them an extra boost to dolphin. Of course it's just an idea I cooked up on my own, so focus on whatever you think is important.

I've been wondering what happened to @tenkminnows, is it active on Hive?

Doesn't appear so. You should get with @steevc about resurrecting it!

@tenkminnows will continue as we have still not achieved that goal. It is still voting and I will review who it votes for.

We do need that strong 'middle class', but a lot of people give up early on and we need to keep them engaged. Getting to a few hundred Hive may help with that.

I was thinking of doing something similar this week!! Good choice on @justinparke. Let me help a little bit more

@tipu curate

I've deinitely had a few close calls where I almost walked away from Steem/Hive, but all-in-all, the good outweighs the bad, and I've made some connections with wonderful people that I would hate to lose. Give thanks for all the support all of you. It feels warm in here, good vibes flowing out of Paramaribo tonight.

Awesome thanks!

Great idea and initiative dear friend engineer, I hope it is followed by others towards influential users like you on deserving users. Best regards.

Influentialish...

Which means not very. :-)

@joshman is a legend, a trendsetter one might say

this is actually quite a good idea and i bet all those new dolphins even before they achieve the dolphin status will do whatever they can to uplift the community and helping other members! it's the fact that somebody help them to and that gratitude will want to show it to others as well!

Great initiative and i hope others with high stakes to follow this as well. It's a win win situation for everyone in the longterm i think

Thanks for your kind words. In strengthening others, we can only increase the value of what we already hold.

@joshman was the first Hiver (Steemian at that time) that made a connection with me beyond just a comment on a post. We connected on Discord, and he gave some solid advice that got me started on the right foot.

I've since tried to pay it forward, manged to onboard a handful of users, but not as much as I wish. I am certainly focused on creating quality original content here, and now going to dabble in curation.

the more active we are and the more we interacting with others will sure lead the platform afar as well as ourselves!

A dolphin at a time :)

Got to start somewhere right?

Good work, good objetive,friend.

@joshman can u make joshmania stop following curangel? u gave me enough flags with this acc. whitelist me or set me at 1% upvote so it doesn't flag etc.

its irritating.

You have got to be joking....

If he ditched the delegation rental, begging for votes, constant powerdown, threatening and punching down on smaller downvoters, and made an honest go of it, I'd just assume move on myself. And gasp, he happens to post some information I think is useful, I might even upvote it.

He wants to be stubborn, and the fact that no whales are jumping into save him, should be a tiny clue as to maybe he's on the wrong side of history here. But here were are...

Remember he is the victim in this whole thing.... :sigh:

Encrypted memos and the works. Trying to scrape up enough Hive to pay for his delegation leases... Yet from what I have seen he hasn’t been able to get any lately. 😢

As a fan of my fellow terminaler @justinparke and his beautiful girl family of course i upvote, and onthe terminal we have some good candidates for the next dolphin up so let me know if you need names

Thanks for the kind words @brittandjosie.

This is an old post so i will go to Justin now and vote on his last post
