The Viral Guinness World Record

Lets talk about Hilda Effiong Bassey the Nigerian star from Akwa Ibom, who won the Guinness World Record longest cooking marathon of 93hours 11minutes.

Sure, she was aiming for 100 hour. Still, we are all very certain her mood was not soared by the 7hours deduction of her perfect 100 solid hours.

She called it best news ever;
“This is the best news ever omg omg omg thank you so much,” she tweeted.

Guinness World Record explained that “As with all ‘longest marathon’ records, the participant is permitted a five-minute rest break for every continuous hour of activity. These rest breaks can be accumulated if not taken. They were the only times Hilda could use the bathroom or sleep during the attempt” – yeah, fair enough, right? It still does not take away the fact that she has broken the record previously held by an India-based chef, Lata Tondon of 87hours 45minutes in 2019.

Hilda Effiong Bassey’s sole purpose was to put Nigerian cuisine on the map and to inspire young African women to chase their dreams (I am touched).

And one Nigerian Lady; Damilola Adeparusi from Ekiti Sate, literally took this to heart for a 120hours cook-a-thon

and sheesh there is a 70/30 (negative/positive) mixed emotions on social media.

"Attempting to break the record isn’t a bad idea but not waiting for a proper sponsor is out of this world, one person Dey try to break record with “iya olonje” standard dishes while the other did with “restaurant” standard dishes."

Another user @unclebobby86 wrote:
“What Dammy is doing, is hunger competition. I see people who haven’t eaten for days rushing her food. Chef Dammy continue saving lives, your reward is in heaven not the Guinness Book of Records.”

And then the user by the name @big_baby28 commenting on the live video wrote:
‘Y’all Dammy is my friend. Na our pastor dey push her. Please forgive Dammy.”

Then Another Twitter user with the handle @DammyOA said “She (Damilola Adeparusi) is obviously not trying to break the record. She’s doing it for publicity".

Well, the fact remains that Damilola Adeparusi has made her mark and the world has finally recognized her, which is in fact Hilda Effiong Bassey’s purpose of breaking the longest cooking marathon record in the first place.
All this just makes me wonder: WHAT NEXT? Maybe, someone will one day decide to break Usain Bolt's 9.58 seconds speed record. who knows? or maybe someone will decide to break Peggy Whitson spacewalk record. Oh,Oh or The longest time breath held voluntarily (male) is 24 min 37.36 sec, achieved by Budimir Šobat (Croatia), in Sisak, Croatia, on 27 March 2021 record. i'm sure that would be so much fun...well, not if you die first.
