Un paseo por la ARA Fragata Presidente Sarmiento

Hola amigos de Hive, espero se encuentren bien.
Hace unos días decidí caminar por Puerto Madero, como suelo hacer de vez en cuando, pero esta vez algo en particular llamó mi atención: la ARA Fragata Presidente Sarmiento , ese majestuoso barco-museo que ha estado ahí por años y que tantas veces había visto. Pero nunca me había detenido a explorar con detenimiento. Así que, sin pensarlo mucho, compré mi entrada y subí a bordo.

A few days ago, I decided to walk around Puerto Madero, as I often do from time to time, but this time, something in particular caught my attention: the ARA Frigate Presidente Sarmiento, that majestic museum-ship that has been there for years and which I had seen so many times. But I had never taken the time to explore it thoroughly. So, without thinking too much, I bought my ticket and boarded.

Al pisar la cubierta de madera, una sensación de viaje en el tiempo me invadió de inmediato. Sentí que no solo estaba en un barco, sino en una pieza viva de la historia naval argentina. Mientras avanzaba, lo primero que me capturó la mirada fue una antigua escafandra de buceo , de esas pesadas, de bronce, que parecen sacadas de una película de aventuras. Me quedé un buen rato mirándola, imaginando a los marineros que la habrían utilizado en su momento, sumergiéndose en las profundidades del océano, luchando contra las corrientes y tal vez hasta contra su propio miedo. Pensé en lo rudimentarios que eran esos equipos en comparación con los modernos trajes de buceo que tenemos hoy. Fue una pequeña ventana al valor que se necesitaba para enfrentar los misterios del mar en aquella época.

As I stepped onto the wooden deck, I was immediately filled with a sense of time travel. I felt that I wasn’t just on a ship, but on a living piece of Argentina's naval history. As I moved forward, the first thing that caught my eye was an old diving helmet, one of those heavy bronze ones that look like they're straight out of an adventure movie. I stood there for a while, staring at it, imagining the sailors who would have used it in their time, diving into the ocean depths, battling the currents, and perhaps even their own fear. I thought about how rudimentary that equipment was compared to the modern diving suits we have today. It was a small window into the courage it took to face the mysteries of the sea back then.

Seguí mi recorrido y me topé con los cañones del barco. Aunque la fragata nunca fue usada en combate, me impresionó la presencia de esas armas pesadas, apuntando al horizonte como si todavía estuvieran listas para la batalla. Me puse a imaginar cómo estaría a bordo en tiempos de guerra, el estruendo ensordecedor de los cañones disparando, la tripulación corriendo de un lado a otro… Y, aunque no ocurrió en este barco, me quedó esa sensación de respeto por los marineros que vivieron esas experiencias.

I continued my journey and came across the ship's cannons. Although the frigate was never used in combat, I was impressed by the presence of those heavy weapons, pointed at the horizon as if they were still ready for battle. I began to imagine what it would be like on board in times of war, the deafening roar of the cannons firing, the crew running from one side to the other... And, although it did not happen on this ship, I was left with that feeling of respect for the sailors who lived those experiences.

Luego, me encontré con los botes salvavidas . Eran más pequeños de lo que esperaba, lo cual me hizo pensar en la fragilidad de estar en medio del océano, confiando tu vida a uno de ellos en caso de emergencia. Me imaginé a la tripulación practicando simulacros, siempre con la esperanza de no tener que usarlos en una situación real, pero listos para cualquier cosa.

Then, I came across the lifeboats. They were smaller than I expected, which made me think about the fragility of being in the middle of the ocean, trusting your life to one of them in case of emergency. I imagined the crew practicing drills, always hoping they wouldn't have to use them in a real situation, but ready for anything.

Sin embargo, lo más sorprendente de todo fue lo que encontré en uno de los camarotes: una barbería . ¡Sí, una barbería en pleno barco! Jamás me hubiera imaginado que los marineros, después de meses en el mar, tenían un lugar donde cortarse el pelo y afeitarse. Me quedé un rato allí, visualizando la escena: los marineros haciendo fila, aprovechando ese pequeño lujo de sentirse un poco más humanos, más cerca de casa. Debía ser más que un simple corte de pelo, me dije. Debía ser un ritual, un momento de camaradería donde se compartían historias, chistes y quizás un poco de nostalgia por los seres queridos que los esperaban en tierra firme.

However, the most surprising of all was what I found in one of the cabins: a barber's shop. Yes, a barbershop right on the ship! I would never have imagined that sailors, after months at sea, had a place to get a haircut and shave. I stayed there for a while, visualizing the scene: the sailors lining up, taking advantage of that small luxury of feeling a little more human, closer to home. It had to be more than just a haircut, I told myself. It was to be a ritual, a moment of camaraderie where stories, jokes and perhaps a little nostalgia were shared for the loved ones who were waiting for them on dry land.

Cuando salí de la fragata y volví a poner los pies en tierra firme, no pude dejar de pensar en todas las historias que ese barco guarda. Cada rincón tenía algo que contar, desde la escafandra hasta los cañones, los botes salvavidas y la inesperada barbería. Fue una experiencia que me permitió viajar al pasado, sumergirme por un rato en la vida de aquellos marineros que alguna vez cruzaron océanos en este majestuoso navío.

When I left the frigate and set foot on dry land again, I couldn't stop thinking about all the stories that ship holds. Every corner had something to tell, from the diving suit to the cannons, the lifeboats and the unexpected barbershop. It was an experience that allowed me to travel back in time, to immerse myself for a while in the lives of those sailors who once crossed oceans on this majestic ship.
