The yard is starting to smell of lilac, as it does each spring, from the East lilacs.
The 9th of May would have been our 36th anniversary of marriage. I carried lily of the valley and lilacs and so I keep a close watch on them each year. They are all early this year. These white lily of the valley are in the South Herb garden.
There are several pink ones in the alcove off the New West garden.
The chives in the South Herb garden have started to open.
With all the warm days this week, the white lilac might open by the 9th.
Sunday morning early I worked on the seedlings, getting the ones up out of covered trays. I ended up taking hollyhocks, kohlrabi, and couple other things out to the cold frame.
But I couldn’t work on them long as I planned to be out mowing by 8AM. The yard was over ankle high in places after 2 weeks of rain.
The New South garden is filling in as the plants grow. But the weeds are helping too.
In order to get the lawn mower out, I had to drive Tom’s Kubota out first. I parked it in the driveway with the car. Then I got as much mowing done as I could. When I finished, I still had an hour left, so I decided to try to learn how to move dirt with the Kubota.
This an old photo of it. He had removed the deck and brush hog before he brought it over.
I tried several methods with the bucket and finally settled on having it laying flat on the ground and back dragging. That gave the smoothest results.
I dragged the excess into the driveway and had to leave it there as I had already run over my time limit by 20 minutes. I had to get back to the house, shower and eat lunch by 1PM. My friend was coming and we were going to Lilacland!
I will have to clean up the mess I made on Monday after I get errands run with my friend.
I wish we could grow lilacs here! Would be nice to have big bushes of lilacs and sweet fragrance along the fence.
Aw, you didn't have him long enough. We are coming up to 20 and I always worry who'll go first and how we'll cope but that's just the nature of life. Glad you can think of him in the Spring though and keep busy xx
