Giving up of soda/pops is possible, but is it necessary?

In my country, there is a culture of always making promises of the new year. It is one of the big numbers of superstitions that people like to do during the changing of numbers in all calendars. For example, different colors that represent a wanted love or more money in your life, some types of behaviors like jumping the sea waves or eating specific meals like lentils. I have a friend that every New Year's Eve he promises that he is going to stop drinking, I think he has a problem with that because it is so hard for him. Always in a maximum of 30 days, he starts drinking again, and every time I see him with a glass of beer in his hand. It is difficult to give up on things that are already rooted in your life, especially if there is a chemical dependence associated with this behavior. Giving up on unhealthy behaviors is a challenge for me as well. But I think at least reducing them already provides a better inner conscience. But I would give up on soda like US friends would call or pop in here.

I have already spent many years of my life not drinking these carbonated drinks with flavors, with popular names like Coca-cola, Sprite, Pepsi cola, and others. When I was in university I decided that I would stop drinking these drinks for my life, why? I had the conscience that I was drinking only beer and soda. It was pretty unhealthy so I would need to give up on one of them since sugar and alcohol weren't the best diet and also both were a bit costly. So I decided to give up on pops in my life.

I started to drink only water and continued drinking beer mostly at home until 2017 when I moved to Canada. When I got here I got two surprises: The price of alcoholic drinks was a bit more expensive and they are heavy in your budget and pops are pretty cheap compared to Brazil. So I reduced a lot of spending my money on alcohol here. I only drink on the weekend, around 4 cans during the weekend or less sometimes, or a bottle of wine that could even last through more days.

And I went back to pops, but at least I don't drink the ones with sugar, only the ones with sweeteners. However, in my point of view these pops even without sugar they are so artificial that have lots of chemicals inside, so I think I would give up again and go back to a strict water diet again. I just don't do it because I need something different to drink every day during supper time, I already drink water every day, but sure I am getting to my 40s, and things in my body are starting to get lazy so I would stick without not drinking pop anymore. I am not drinking sugar but the rest of the components of the pop sure raise my risk of cancer (since everything causes cancer, even breathing) and getting teeth problems because of the acidity.

To stick with this new diet, I need to make something simple just don't buy the giant 24 cans box when I go to the groceries. I usually buy one box a month, so I would save an amazing 10$ to my budget which is less than my alcohol expenses per week. A cheap bottle of wine costs around 10$, and 12 cheap small cans of beer costs 15-16$. So I think that if I don't have the pop at home I won't take it, we go out maybe 2-3 times to eat outside per month, so I would need to order water also, which I usually already do since water glass in here is free so it is better for my pocket anyways.

Our body behaves according to what we put in, I have a family with nutritional disorders. My brother-in-law and nephew both have obesity. When my nephew was born I was so astonished by the parent's behavior in giving unhealthy food to a baby, they started to give him sugar and coke when he was under two. Now with 12, you imagine where he is.

At home, both I and my wife are pretty conscious about nutritional balance. Of course, we give once in a while sugar, not every day but most importantly we are happy that both of them eat vegetables, fish, and other important food even if they fight sometimes. There are bad nutritional foods like pop that we take, but the most important is not drinking the whole day, still giving up is an option and for sure will improve my life.

@gwajnberg Doing absolutely fine. You should pay attention to your children's diet. I haven't even tried beer yet. And that's probably because my parents strictly forbade me to drink it. We should focus on our health first

I know people that doesn't like the taste of beer lol! But anyways I think that are so many things that are bad to eat/drink. Kids need to learn what they are and I think we should strictly forbid it, but at least teach them to prefer water than a glass of beer/pop/coffee.

I think this soda of a thing is one problem I have. I won't say I'm addicted, but sometimes the feeling comes and goes. There are weeks I'll take soda almost everyday. More than once in a day sometimes. And then, I can also go for a month without even tasting it.
I don't know what to call my own, hehe😂

when I was younger , like kid, people had less education about all the problems, I remember that I was drinking almost a 2l bottle every a couple of days lol.
I changed only later, but also my mom decided to cut a bit our drinking lol. But I understand you, I decided to stop drinking, I stayed years without it, and now I am drinking again lol

I drink Pepsi Coca-Cola and sprite whenever I am having fast food such as pizza or burger otherwise I would not drink it. At first I was very addicted to it and drink it daily but now I know how to control myself. But still yeah I have to stop drinking these stuffs.

We all go through this 😬dont blame yourself

I think the expenses of drinks indirectly forced to come at the current position 😅. Taking soda is a regular basis is no good also. It's not also healthy either. Try to reduce it.
And indeed you need to be conscious about the diet of others also as your family members have some history of nutrition issues 🙂.
