King Stropharia (Wine Cap) Mushroom patch update

in #homestead7 years ago (edited)

I inoculated wood scraps from my woodworking projects last fall with king stropharia spawn, and finally I got my first flush of mushrooms!

They are still a little small to harvest but I would guess I will be cutting them tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully I will get another harvest or two off this patch before I break it up and inoculate several more patches with it.

Thanks for looking!
If you have any suggestions on how to cook these let me know, I generally saute mushrooms with garlic but I've heard wine caps are not very good saute'd.

Congrats! There's nothing better than enjoying the fruits of your hard work.

I don't know much about cooking mushrooms, so I can't help you there.
One of my neighbors has been trying to grow mushrooms on sections of logs in his back yard. I find the process fascinating, but I have no idea how long it takes to start getting mushrooms.

When I looked into growing mushrooms I wanted to grow reishi, maitake, and shiatake but they all required log sections and I was looking to use my woodshop scraps as grow media which is how I settled on king stropharia. From what I read about growing on log sections, the time to fruiting is mostly determined by the size of the log you inoculate. I've heard people get their first flush at 6 months and I've also heard it can take 3+ years so i'm not sure what you can really expect.
