Folks, I need your help. I found my chickens eating an egg this morning, to much dismay. This is the second flock in a row of mine that have developed into egg eaters. And these birds are young and have at least another two years of laying so I would rather not kill them. Arrggh!

Any Suggestions?? Has anyone successfully trained their birds out of egg eating?

Generally, the egg eating is an indication of either a low protein diet or not enough water.

Bump their protein levels and ensure they have enough water, and see if that helps.

  • Don't leave eggs for very long in the laying box. Chickens tell you when they laid.
  • Put some golf balls in the laying box. The egg eating chicken will peck it, and it will hurt, and they may stop.
  • Do not leave broken eggs in the coop.
  • Chickens need protein. Are there enough bugs in their diet? If not, kill a rabbit, strip it and hang it up for them to eat.

usually a chicken that eats eggs is a stress chicken. try not to make chicken stress by feeding enough.

We would just check the nesting boxes several times a day to get them to stop eating their eggs.

Do you save the shells to wash, dry, and then grind into a course meal to be added later to their feed? Maybe they need calcium?

Good luck @brownsgreens!

Nice post

I came across a similar post earlier. Question - Do you feed your chickens egg shells? It is a common practice and is good for them and the strength of the eggs that they lay; but a common mistake is that people wont grind then up first, just throw whole, cracked, shells in with their feed. This is a quick way to teach them that their eggs are a source of food. As far as training them out of the habit....??? I will follow to see if anyone has a tip! A squirt bottle like with cats? HAHA Good luck friend!
