Finishing the Cellar - April 13, 2025 @goldenoakfarm

Walkway in cellar finished collage crop April 2025.jpg

On Sunday morning I was up at 6:15AM and started on the seedlings. I got the lights raised; notes made, tended them, and then watered them. It took 2 hours.

I got a few other things done and had sat down for 10 minutes when my new #3 intern and his dad, Tom, arrived at 9AM. Tom was going to mess around with his Kubota out in the barn while we worked.

So all the boxes in the upstairs hallway got carried down and put on the shelves. They just fit.

Next we tackled the next shelf of paint to see what was any good. Then we cleaned out the other shelves, discarding things no longer good. He carried box after box of old paint upstairs.

Once the wood cabinet was emptied, we moved it down and started refilling it. It had a lot of space left, so we went over to the workshop in the new addition cellar and got all the pain left there. Once that was checked, we got it into the wooden cabinet.

We were able to get it all on the wooden shelves. I had a wire rack shelving unit and we built that and put lightweight stuff on it. There was a 5 gallon bucket of paint next to it and just enough room to get the box of window parts in next to the filing cabinet.

Then we cleaned up and I drew a map and wrote up the inventory and the cellar was done. Once upstairs, he carried all the old paint out to the woodshed and the trash to the trash shed.

Tom came back from the barn and announced that when he got up there, he found the truck’s muffler lying beside the driveway. Sigh… now I have to put a new muffler on so I can use it and get it inspected in May. Tom thinks he can do it and is going to see if he can find the parts needed.

They left around 1PM and my foot was really hurting so I sat down for a couple hours.

Mesclun2 needing 3rd haircut crop April 2025.jpg

When I had done the seedlings, I had set the mesclun on the table as I HAD to give it a haircut. The window guy is coming on Monday and I won’t be able to do it then. And it’s going out to the cold frame on Tuesday when my helper friend comes.

So I got up and cut another big bowl of mesclun off the 2 trays and cleaned it and the mess it made. Then I sat down for another hour before getting a load of dishes in the dishwasher at 4:30PM.

That was all I could do for the day, except get my post written and up and write this post for Monday morning.

I have a LOT of work to do before the window guy gets here at 8AM as we will be doing all the windows requiring a ladder. We will be taking down the seedling shelving in the dining room, roundtop, and back porch, to do the windows. Then we have to put it back up after. So it’s going to be a LONG day.

Sort:

I hope you have a ladder which the window guy can use
Also, sorry about your foot
You can soak it up in a cold water…

wow the mesclun is grown so much... it cant resist outside in the snow

It would not survive in the snow. It's grown inside.

You are really doing a very great job actually I must confess
