Fire near the homestead!

We had a scare this week. Fortunately we had some rain earlier in the week that kept this fire from spreading at the speed of light.

Learn the prominent features around you. Then you can pick coordinates off as needed. May come in handy some day.

I certainly want to get some good maps like that. Some friends of mine and I have talked about possibly having our wives drop us off 20 miles into the wild or so, and we would make our way out. Couldn't do it this year, but hopefully we could do that in the next year or so.

Now that would make an interesting video!

It certainly would. I have wanted to do it for some time. We have the largest wilderness area in the lower 48 states and we can drive to its' edge in about 15-20 minutes. It is certainly breath taking.

Fires are ALWAYS scary! Are the wildfires out west anywhere near where you are? And as requested....upvoted and resteemed! Oh and you said holy day...is it the Feast of Tabernacles/Sukkot?

We had wildfires all around us, but they were 30-50 miles away or more, but we had so many, and so many BIG ones, that we were smothered in smoke for a long time. Yes, I was speaking of Sukkot. Nice pickup. I wasn't sure anybody would catch that.

I am looking forward to that Feast as well, at least as of now it is looking like we are going to have good weather here in central Illinois.

We are praying for good weather. Last year was pretty tuff. We were just above freezing and raining nearly the entire time. I am trying hard this year to set up better, but soooo looking forward to the feast. Should be a blast.

Fires are so frightening. They travel so quickly and they aren't particular to what's in their path. It must have been very frightening for your family. Upvoted and resteemed.

It certainly can be. Once I got eyes on this fire I was too nervous for multiple reasons. We were the only fire around, so we ended up with about 12 trucks on that fire within 20 minutes of calling it in. Also we had had rain a few days in a row, so although the grass was still dry, it wasn't bone dry like it was just the week before, and because it started at the top of that ridge, I wasn't too concerned about it making down to our area fast, because I learned with our last big fire, fire doesn't go down hill nearly as fast as it goes uphill, unless a tree that is on fire breaks away and rolls down igniting everything below, which I witnessed a lot of 2 years ago.

I have only been close to a fire once. We had all the smoke and the flames came within one-eighth of a mile. It might have been me in the heightened state of worry, but I swear we could feel the heat of the flames. I evacuated with the kids and my husband stayed to help fight the fire. We were very lucky and between firefighters (and many volunteers) and the rain that came, our place was saved. Months later I could still smell the charred trees...

I can't imagine what that would feel like to see a fire heading your way.

At first...sheer panic. Our firefighters were on it in a hurry. I almost grabbed some gear to head up there and start fighting it myself, but they ended up with nearly a dozen trucks on that fire within about 20 minutes of calling it in.
