Wow, real nice story! I was just reading another scifi piece and I'll say what I said there: writing well-rounded and concise scifi is a hard thing to do! I think the most common mistake is precisely in concision. Most beginners (me included) often add and add elements to an universe and then can't find what to do with them and the story gets abandoned or falls apart due to lack of consistency. But you managed to created a nicely defined small universe - adding horror to it nonetheless!
