Mind the size of your kitchen

When building a house, many home owners focus on having big spacious sitting rooms, bedrooms because they feel these are the most important rooms of the house.

They feel they are the first rooms to be noticed by guests hence ignoring the kitchens and they end up having small ones to minimize space.

“Although most people try to minimize space, small kitchens make work difficult. This is because you have to do one work at the go. For example; You will have to first wash dishes before you start cooking because of limited space. When the kitchen is big, you can do two things at a go.” Ruth Kagave, design and field director Abraham décor house, says.

She adds that if the work space is limited it makes chores like serving very difficult. It is really difficult to serve dinner or breakfast in a small kitchen.

Ruth also says that more accidents can happen in small kitchens than in big ones. This is because everything is squeezed up in trying to maximize space.

In case of fire, it is difficult to stop it because of many piled up things. You end up losing many things compared to what you would have lost in a big kitchen.

Besides, dangerous reptiles like snakes are hard to be noticed when they enter small kitchens.

Ruth says that you cannot have what you want in the small kitchen. Although you have money, things like microwave, fridge, cooker, water heater, bread toaster might be missing in your kitchen because of limited space making your kitchen look so local and not attractive.

She adds that it is also hard to decorate a small kitchen to make it look tidy and organized. Because it is difficult to decorate them, most of them do not look appealing to the eyes.

Ruth also says that there is no room for family members to hang out in a small kitchen. Since the kitchen is the most hang out place for family members, they need enough space but a Small kitchen limits them and the fine they are supposed to have together in the kitchen. Because of limited space, they also limited fresh air entering into the house.

“They also lack enough counter space when serving dinner to relatives and family members. When trying to serve, you might even pour the food because of the panic of limited space. You end up making a loss and doing double work”. She adds

Ruth also says that although small kitchens have a number of disadvantages,(Cons) they also have some advantages. This gives us a reason to appreciate some of them.

“A small kitchen makes you develop good cooking habits like using a garbage bowl, how to rise and cleaning up a tool instead of grabbing another one. You do not have space for the piled dirty utensils. This makes your cooking life organized and workable”.

She adds that small kitchens are not expensive to construct. This gives you an opportunity to save money and make your house look better through proper interior designing. There is also easy reach up for things because you do not have to strain looking or getting tools to use in the kitchen.

Ruth also says that working in the small kitchen makes you know what to buy, keep and what to get rid of. There is no extravagancy because you have to buy items which are just enough for the kitchen.

“When using a small kitchen, it helps you to plan how best you can organize your kitchen. This helps you to utilize the available space like walls for storage.’’ Racheal Mwesigye, managing director Mwesigye Decor Company Fort portal, says

She says that one can make the small kitchen look better by using natural colours like lime green and brown. Sufficient lighting will make a small kitchen look spacious.

‘’ In interior designing, bright colours are not advisable because a kitchen is the most hang out place for family members.” She adds.

Racheal also says that the problem is not the small space because you can utilize the wasted space by putting shelves. Put the baskets above the cabinets if you have enough space. You can also choose compact appliances like under counter fridge. Always know what you what in the kitchen.
