There were a great number of camps, ran by both Soviets and Allied forces which worked German POW (reclassified as 'disarmed enemy combatants' to avoid Geneva convention rules) and civilians to death via forced labour and starvation rations - ethnic Germans death toll, post 1945 ran into the millions.
Some German POW's who survived the Soviet forced labour camps weren't released in 1953 and he last major repatriation of Germans from the Soviet Union didn't occur until as late as 1956 - a full eleven years after the war had ended - what fraction of them survived this long is anyone's guess.
Even wikipedia has some interesting entries/ references on this...
Obviously, obtaining accurate statistics or even reliable versions of events from around this time is near impossible - the website below contains lots of quotes as well as images/ links to MSM coverage of the camps and whilst it includes some questionable figures/ sources - it also has lots of first-hand accounts and quotes by allied military officials, journalists and other sources 'on the ground' at the time in question.
Of course, this plan (to destroy the German people as a nation) was hatched long before these camps were established - for an insights into the ideology behind the genocide, I highly recommend this blog...
