Happy Chuseok Week Everyone!

Homebound

I’ll be in Korea for the next several days, making it only the 2nd time I’ve spent in Korea during its most important holiday - Chuseok. The ‘Autumn Festival’ is an equivalent to Thanksgiving in the US, though instead of giving thanks in general, Chuseok is more dedicated to honoring one’s ancestors with proper proceedings.

I won’t bore you with all the details, which as nicely summed up on Wikipedia. Just wanted to swing by during the day to send good juju from Seoul. Rather than celebrating birthdays or funeral dates of late family members, the country dedicates a day to passed loved ones, mostly on the patriarchal side of the family. It’s interesting that it’s a dedicated occasion for the entire culture, and I wanted to emphasize that fact for the sake of this writing. Even though you don’t have any Korean blood in you, take a moment to give thanks to your grandparents and extended family who may have passed on years ago.

Though some of the proceedings might be a bit somber during the day, it’s often a pretty joyous occasion with lots of food and flowing drinks. If you’re looking for a reason to invigorate your mundane Monday, make it Korean-themed in joy of Chuseok!

Go wrangle up some buddies for Korean bbq!

Watch Oldboy or Train to Busan to learn a few new words!

Say ‘Ahnyoung’ to a friend!

Get that yearly concentrated dose of Korean culture and enjoy the day, Steem on!
