From Car Crash to Ice Blades: A Week in Retrospective (Daily Poem 2/14)

in #life3 years ago (edited)

Happy Valentine’s Day!
Or so they all say.
Well I’m not happy today,
Or this entire past week any day!

First the snow and slush,
Turns driving skills to mush,
And I get rear-ended driving
To work to earn a living.

I got away okay,
Bumper and muffler got a little play.
But the other car suffered loads,
Airbags deployed; I think it’s totaled.

Work was understanding,
But an hour’s pay is lacking.
So I’m not a happy girl today,
No siree!

The auto guy promised the sky,
But ended up with a deny,
Saying the insurance assessment made,
Would not be enough money paid.

The shop wants over $2k,
Insurance went no way!
What am I supposed to do,
Hold the bumper in place and add glue?!

Shop around the body shops,
Where will the insurance check stop?
Finally find one that will work with insurance directly,
But unfortunately I’m penciled in for May.

To make myself feel better,
I signed my name in looping letters,
On a personal injury liability waiver;
I signed up to be an ice skater!

Finally lessons after a long time wanting,
Despite my love of figure skating!
I had my first class Saturday morning,
With boots tight and blades shining!

Class consisted of a hundred kids and me,
Plus an instructor or…twenty-three?
Here comes another adult learner,
She’s the mom of one of the hockey players.

Monday I had just enough time,
To go grocery shopping on my own dime.
I also got some more comfy Skechers leggings,
Oh and a beautiful pair of pearl earrings!

So that was my week,
For the most part rather bleak.
It went from cars boom boom,
To pearls bling bling!

The cars boom boom is a reference to an old Chinese/immigrant joke - a Chinese immigrant/non-native English speaker is on the stand to testify in a car accident. “One car come. One car go. Two car boom boom. One car leave.” My dad’s favorite joke, lol.

I know these photos aren’t the greatest; but I’m protecting my privacy by not giving better photos, especially since the car issue is still pending. Suffice to say, bumper damage near plate, so I can’t share that photo. All photos taken with my iPhone SE2.

Insurance companies suck, for sure; they act like it comes out of their pockets after they gouge the people for the exhorbitant fees they charge. It's good that you were able to find someone to work on your car, but if you didn't, then block the bumper up and use marine epoxy because of the snow and ice in your area lol. And the stuff inside the bumper that costs so much? It's foam, and it's labeled as a shock-absorbtion bumper.
Mostly, glad you're okay. And I miss ice and roller skating, I used to do them both really well.

I love to rollerblade too! But it’s too cold right now. I rollerblade in the basement sometimes, in summer. Right now the basement is a freezer.

Yeah, the first shop I took it to was kind enough to pop the bumper back in. There’s a gap but it’s no longer separated. I think the foam inside will likely need to be replaced after another 2 months of snow, but that’s for the shop and insurance to deal with. I’m just glad this shop is willing to deal with insurance for me, instead of refusing to. I have no idea why the first shop wanted ME to pay first then go after insurance myself. They did promise 2-3 day turnaround though…. Guess no one wants to use them, lol. If the good shop is booked until May already.

Definitely do NOT want to use a shop that demands payment, the insurance company is supposed to set that up. Also, they are required in any rear-ender to replace the shock absorbtion bumper assembly inside, if they don't and someone else hits you again and you sustain any type of injury, you could sue them for not replacing the absorbtion material.

Thank you!!! I knew the first shop was talking out of their tushes

Hi @amyx, I just met you today in The Terminal. I'm still quite new around here. Your poem was really good, despite the mostly bad news it contained. This is a nice way to "turn a frown upside down", as the saying goes. I'm not really talented with poetry, myself.

I remember ice skating when I was young. I was more into rollerskating back in those days, but I did try a bit of ice skating as well. In fact, I used to rollerskate to and from work at one point, haha. This was in the days long before the new-fangled "inline skates" were invented.

Upvoted & Commented.

Wow! I’ve never met a non-online skater! How do you balance on 8 wheels like that?

Haha, it was much easier to learn how to balance on the traditional rollerskates than the in-line skates / rollerblades. Ice skating and rollerblading are very similar to each other, so it isn't as hard to switch from one to the other. But learning to ice / blade from traditional rollerskating takes a while to get used to. With the rollerskates there isn't as much effort to balance your feet, and they are normally heavier, too.

I’ve only ever tried quads on in store. I remember I couldn’t stay balanced, I’m so used to inner side of the edge balancing and turns.
