In the aftermath of the Charlotte church shootings, a movement arose to remove the Confederate flag from southern state capitals due to its association with slavery and white supremacy. In the midst of this controversy, conservative author, commentator, and agitator Dinesh D’Souza tweeted a photo of a young Hilary Rodham (later Clinton) in her home, with a Confederate flag visible in the background. The original photos taken for LIFE magazine soon surfaced, however, and it was apparent that there was no Confederate flag in the room. Though D’Souza was not the original source of the doctored image, he did later correct his tweet when the truth emerged.
