I Have A Degree I Can't Use What Should I Do?

in #life8 years ago

There are several factors, which may come into play for getting a job right out of college. We’re going to cover enough that could give anyone better perspective. First and foremost not all majors carry the same weight, no two students are alike, and no two schools are alike. Let’s begin with the commonalities of it all and how you can separate yourself to get what you want.

All degrees carry weight to them the problem is they won’t carry it all the same. For example, if two recent grads took an interview, one graduate is from a tier 1 college with and the other is from an unranked college the scales have already begun to tip. In this case, the graduate from the unranked college would need other qualities to level the playing field.

So that we are all clear, it does not matter regarding the major in which you completed your degree. The only thing that matters is the quality of the person and their ability to sell themselves. However, this is from a general standpoint, as you need to be realistic. As a guide to what cannot be taken on take into consideration the factors of leverage.

Get a sheet of paper and take note of your leverage ability. We will not list by degree, as there are too many unknown factors. For areas where you lack in leverage, you need to improve and or better your average in others.

Degree Applicability

If you get a degree in an extinct language, there is little to no leverage as there is a lack of demand and you’ve painted yourself into a box. However, you can pivot from this if you’ve taken enough classes, which better relate to general skills such as administration. Another means of pivoting from this degree is to obtain a masters degree in a field, which could better your arsenal. Two graduate degree types come to mind; they are business and public administration.

Job Skills

Do you have experience in the major you’ve chosen and if so what level?

If you know what field you want to take on, don't just study, as you need to get some experience under your belt. Take on unpaid positions if need be as you'll need a good level of experience to set yourself apart. Opportunities are available, and the Internet makes them much more accessible. Many employers do not want to pay for training, and that is the difference between getting a job or taking “time off” after graduation. They don’t want to take away from general knowledge training as it takes away from their bottom line.

Networks

Have you ever seen someone in I position they didn’t necessarily deserve and asked yourself how they got there? One of those answers could be they utilized or established a network to their benefit. Sometimes people put too much emphasis on a craft and forget that can only take you so far. Imagine your favorite singer without the persons who helped place them into the position they hold along the way. Now the person as mentioned above is just another unknown artist with potential instead of a star. If you aren’t a social person, you need to get over yourself. Go online and research groups and or circles and find a means of becoming a part of the conversation. Some of us here have had opportunities fielded in our direction not because of what we went to school for but was because of people we know.

Sales

Yes, the word above is correct. Most people don’t see themselves as a product. If they ever want to succeed they need to see this and tap into their potential so that others may know.

Can you walk up to a stranger, get their attention, command their attention and have them wanting to buy whatever you’re selling? If the answer is no, then you need to work on those attributes.

From the information as given, I can’t guarantee you’re going to get your dream job, but you will have the tools to succeed.

I am running for a position on the curation team. What the curation team does is they find the people that need saving because they  need it and deserve to be. I’d like to throw you a life saver if I can.

Huh, realistic, practical answers to actual problems. Would you look at that? There's someone who's not afraid of real talk on this platform.

Quite refreshing reading this comparing to the usual feel-good bs that holds no real life consideration. I shall keep your advice close to heart.

Thanks! I can't say I'll be following the "lollipops and candy dream" theme in most of my postings.

You do what you need to do. I'm just here for decoration. Looking forward to your next post
