Good morning dear friends, I want to talk about sex and disabilities, People with disabilities (PWDs) can also have sex. In the past, few people researched, or talked about, their sex life. Now this is changing. But there are still a lot of myths out there - so let's destroy them!

  • People with disabilities do not have sex
People with disabilities (PWDs) can only become sexually active with their more powerful peers. They have sexual desires and needs just like everyone else, though they may express themselves differently.

Some people think that PWDs are less sexual than their peers. But that too is a myth.

  • All PWDs are virgins
People with disabilities can have sex, so don't think that someone is a virgin because they have a disability. This myth puts PWDs at risk of abuse, as some people believe in 'virgin cleansing', the belief that having sex with a virgin will cure STDs such as HIV.

  • PWDs do not require love or sex
The fact that someone is living with a disability does not mean they do not deserve love, nor do they need sex. They deserve it, and they can love and be loved.

  • PWDs only have sex and have relationships with other PWDs
Relationships always work hard for both partners, whether they live with disabilities or not. However, just because you live with a disability does not mean you cannot contribute to a relationship.
Relationships are about love and respect. Caring for one another.

  • PWDs can't have real sex
There is no such thing as 'real sex'. There are no sex rules. Sex is always different, and you can never have sex the same way twice. So how can there be a right or a wrong way? Have sex the way you and your partner like it - all that matters!

  • PWDs cannot have STDs
It's bad. Personal disability does not affect STDs. People with disabilities may experience STDs just like everyone else. It is therefore important to use condoms or have sex with a partner who has been tested for STDs.

  • PWDs do not require sexual education
They certainly do. If people are going to have sex, they should have all the information they need. About protecting against STDs and pregnancy. Or about what is involved in sex. Or about learning to deal with sexual violence. And contrary to what some people believe, access to sex education does not encourage people to have sex. It allows them to make educated choices when they decide to have sex.

  • PWDs should not have children
When there are no anatomical limitations, PWDs just can't be as good parents as anyone else. They may need help from time to time, but what new parent doesn't need it? It should be noted that people with disabilities are human being and have the right to do what others do, they have the right to be happy, loved and be loved. People should learn to treat them with the respect they deserve.
