My In-law's had a very nice Box Elder that would cast dappled shade on the porch and front windows. It would help keep the house cool and comfortable. Friday afternoon, with a light breeze, the tree decided to split in twain. It clipped the satellite dish and ripped the receiver right off the arm. It also landed partially on the roof and narrowly missed my brother-in-law's new motorcycle.
The failure of the trees structural integrity is due to some sort of rot in the trunk. The tree was completely hollowed out at the base and could no longer support the upper branches. The whole tree may need to be removed and a new one put in its place. The cleanup of the tree will commence shortly after breakfast Saturday. We always did love an excuse to fire up the chainsaws, wood chipper, and log splitter. We'll make short work of this mess, heck, were practically professionals at tree removal.
This tree was over 150 years old. My father in-law installed a zip line from the tree down the hill and tied off to another gigantic tree. Evidence of the old zip line line was a half inch by 2 foot long carriage bolt and chain grown through the center of the tree. Though the tree will be missed, its time to cleanup the mess.
As a group we decided to remove the entire tree, it was in bad shape, and only a matter of time before the rest of it fell over. We were able to use a tow strap tied off to the pickup to pull the tree down into the yard. The cleanup took 6 people 7 hours to completely cut and remove the entire tree. There is no wonder how professionals charge $1000 -$1200 for a removal of a tree this size. Direct TV also stopped by the same day and made repairs to the satellite dish in about an hour.
