Alternative to a Scalpel: Review of Technical Innovations in Medicine

in #medicine7 years ago (edited)

Technical progress does not stand still. Of course, the development of technical innovations in the field of medicine is not an easy matter, because it is about a person's life. But everyone understands that we need to move forward. The scalpel and the skilled hands of the surgeon are good, but at the present stage it is not enough. The future is for minimally invasive surgery. Precision manipulations on the brain, after which it is imperceptible that a person underwent a serious intervention, surgery inside the vessels, restoring the patency of the fallopian tubes, a little more than human hair! The huge, traumatic surgical incisions from the throat to the pubis disappear into the past. The future has come! Today I present to you an overview of cool technical innovations in the field of medicine.

Da Vinci Robotic System

The most famous intuitive surgical 3D console. More than 7000 scientific publications are written in this system. It consists of two blocks: the first unit is for the surgeon by the type of the Playstation game console and the second unit in the operating room consists of four "hands", one of which holds a video camera, and the other three are surgical instruments for micro-invasive -resections) of surgical interventions.

With the help of the Da Vinci system, operations are performed on the brain, heart, gynecological operations, on the lungs, kidneys, stomach and other organs. To date, about 3000 such devices have been built. The cost of the Da Vinci system is about 2 million dollars.

Robotic Sensei X2 catheter system from Hansen

Developed in 2014 for minimally invasive endovascular (intravascular) procedures. Uses three-dimensional visualization to control the work of the surgeon. Allows to conduct surgical interventions to eliminate plaques that caused myocardial infarction, as well as heart surgery.

Rosa robotic surgery system

The French company Medtech IST in 2012 released two robotic systems for operations on the spine and brain called "Pink Brain" and "Rose of the spine." ROSA (robotic stereotaxic help) is a hand with six degrees of free movement, imitating the movements of the surgeon's hand. Widely used in the US, in the UPMC Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, where it is used for diagnosis and surgical minimally invasive treatment of epilepsy.

Japanese robotic nurses Riba, Kokoro

Japanese robot Riba, reminiscent of a large bear, is designed to raise and carry patients, weighing 60 kilograms and more. Equipped with special tactile sensors to prevent slipping of the body, as well as two cameras and two microphones that allow the transfer of personnel commands to the patient.

Clever Neofect glove

A former employee of Samsung, and now the head of the startup Neofect has developed a device for the rehabilitation of patients with a stroke. It was created for the speedy restoration of movements in the hands of stroke patients. Analyzes data from sensors via Bluetooth, allowing patients to conduct 30-minute exercises simulating a meal or playing ping-pong. The cost of a glove is $ 1,000.

Of course, this is not all. There are other cool inventions, no less interesting and necessary, but I will tell about them next time. See you next time .....
