Hello people!
All health conscious people over the world preferring vegetables mostly in juice form or as smoothie but this may turn into death. Especially vegetables belongs to Cucurbitaceae family are involved. The compound known as cucurbitacin cause the bitter taste in this vegetables. The bitterness is more concentrated in the stem and in the peel. It may trigger allergic reactions, bloating and indigestion, vomiting, dysentery. High concentration of cucurbitacin may result in cardiac arrest and death.

List of vegetables in Cucurbitaceae family with common and scientific name-

  1. Bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria)
  2. Bryony (Bryonia alba)
  3. Bur cucumber (Sicyos angulatus)
  4. Calabazilla (Cucurbita foetidissima)
  5. Chayote (Sechium edule)
  6. Colocynth (Citrullus colocynthis)
  7. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus)
  8. Gherkin (Cucumis anguria)
  9. Loofah (Genus luffa)
  10. Melon (Cucumis melo)
  11. Musk cucumber (Sicana odorifera)

How to avoid it-

  1. Eat fruits instead of fruit juices or smoothies, remove the peel and slice off the stem before eating, if found too much bitter in taste don’t eat.
  2. May take juices or smoothies if advised by physician or nutritionist, if found too much bitter in taste don’t drink.
  3. Try to avoid juices of theses vegetables at roadside or in restaurants.
  4. If accidentally eat fruits or drink juice showing above complications contact your physician.
