What is this thing?

Donate your tab mines Monero ($XMR) coins by using your browser and donating the money to charity. All you have to do is select the charity you want to help and leave the website open in the background which will use your spare CPU cycles to make the charity's money.

Why Monero?

Because it has a market cap of over $1.3 billion and doesn't need significant GPU processing power like Ethereum and Bitcoin to mine.

How does the mining work?

Through the use of Coin Hive, an API that allows browser based cryptocurrency mining. All of the hashes you compute in-browser go into their pool and once Donate your tab reaches a certain dollar amount Coin Hive sends them the money. They then cut a check to each charity based on how much was generated. Donate your tab make 0 dollars off this. Coin Hive takes 30% of all proceeds for running the mining pool and providing the mining services. Currently, Donate your tab are exploring ways to make that number lower by using a different or homegrown solution. They also use money raised to cover fees to run this site (hosting, taxes, etc.)

How much money can we raise on this thing?

Good question. Mining cryptocurrency isn't profitable unless you do it over an extended period of time and have lots of people contributing.

Let's say you can make $0.10 for leaving this thing running in a browser tab all day. $0.10 x 100,000 users x 365 days = $3,650,000 to charity.

Controlling the Mining Speed

One thing I really like about Donate your tab is how I can control the mining speed with their slider which lowers my hashrate which will save my processor's power.

Opinion

I love the concept but it will heavily require a committed community to ensure there is constantly mining. I would recommend the maker to make smart contracts to uphold transparency. Furthermore, what will be really good is gamification where people can see how much money they have raised and compete against their friends but also see exactly where their money are going to.
