Steemit as a High Schooler's Summer Job

in #money8 years ago (edited)

While many 16, 17, and 18 year olds this summer are working at restaurants, pools, and car washes as summer jobs. I am at home working through steemit and other crypto opportunities. I have adults ask me, "so what are you doing this summer" or "do you have a job this summer" and many other things of the like. It's always difficult to explain to them that no I do not have a traditional "job" where you go and work for 6 hours or so Monday through Friday and get paid every 2 weeks or so. Not because steemit isn't a "legitimate" job, but because they wouldn't understand, many of them at least. I figured I'd write this post to explain what I am doing this summer and how this has evolved into a job of sorts for me.

May 21st: I Discover Ethereum

It was Final Exam week, the week I face the majority of my procrastination. Every year during this week I find my self browsing the internet, specifically Reddit and Youtube , and always end up finding things I never would have discovered otherwise. This year I stumbled onto Medium, made an account, and added all the tech related tags. I added "cryptocurrency" as a tag to follow, not thinking much of it at the time. I knew what crypto was. I knew of bitcoin, litecoin, dogecoin. I even considered buying some bitcoin back in 2013 (still kicking my self for not doing so to this day). So when I read my first few posts about Ethereum I knew I had to jump on board, if not only because I did not want to be able to say in 3 years "I almost bought Ethereum".

May 29th: Ethereum as my Senior Year Paper

The last week of school we were told we would need to come up with a topic to write our 15 page paper on. I chose to write it about Ethereum, not knowing whether it would be on the mining aspect, blockchain, or what really. But the assignment of picking a topic was over and summer had now started.

June 3rd: Ethereum Mining

I read more about hashrates and throw together my mining rig with some spare parts I had in a couple hours. 2x R9 290's and I'm mining at about 60MH/s

June 4th: I'm "finished", for now.

The rig was done. I was making money and just got to sit back and relax, so I thought. I figured I'd try day trading Ethereum and try and short it once I got a substantial amount. I began watching youtubers like @craig-grant @crypt0 @bitcoinmeister and @trevonjb to learn about crypto currency and keep up with the latest ethereum news as I watch them daily.

July 14th: I Join Steemit

I join steemit and read a lot about how to succeed on the platform. I start actively trading on Bittrex and sell some Ether for Steem.

July 21st: Posting on Steemit and Day Trading

Ever since I joined Steemit I've been posting every day and been buying steem low and selling high. This is where I begin to believe that this could be a viable summer job.

How I've Been Making Money So Far...

1 . Mining
With a 60MH/s Ethereum rig running for the past month and a half I've been able to mine a couple hundred dollars worth of Ether which I can now invest in other currencies. Before Steemit this was the only method of obtaining crypto I had. I have not purchased any crypto with my money, only earned. So far I've mined about 12-15 Ether.

2 . Trading
I've now been shorting Ether and Steem by trading back and forth on Bittrex and made about .05 BTC not bad for a couple days and only having .3 BTC or so to work with in Bitrex.

3 . Posting
I've been posting 3-5 times for the past week and have about 23 Steem Power, I know pretty weak I have yet to really crack the secret on making a really popular post that gets $1000's (Maybe this will be it who knows) Steemit says I have about $100 USD between steem power and steem.

So I haven't gotten rich, but I've made enough to make me believe that if I keep working at it, I can make more than the average teenager at their summer job.

Hmmm my niece is 9yrs old. I wonder how young is to young to use Steemit?

Good for you and your glass-half-full attitude! I wish you all the best with future posts. You've got my upvote.

feels good to see myself in this post, I appreciate your time and attention... Craig :)

You are a smart and saavy, forward- thinking individual. In the words of The Offspring - "You're Gonna Go Far Kid"!. Thank your for the shoutout and support- you are a rock solid member of the community now and I'm happy that you could count me among The Adammeister, Craig Grant, and Trevonjb as those who got you involved- they're all definitely the reason I'm here as well. You have my upvote, and may this post reach your first 1,000$ or more- You deserve it.

thanks for the comment and support!

Thanks for the shout out! Keep on plugging away! I personally think you should only post and curate and create good content. Day trading is way too risky. Let us stay in touch. One of these days I may have a way for you to earn some BTC. Here is my latest https://steemit.com/steemit/@bitcoinmeister/how-bitcoin-and-ethereum-fans-should-handle-the-rise-of-steem

Who would have thought one could make serious money on the internet just a few years ago?

Wow how the world changed when steemit was born ,a big up vote from me

I feel so lucky that I've grown up in a world with so many opportunities due to the internet.

craig is like a philosopher/rapper/trader.

We are all lucky to be the early adopters of this platform. :)

Your post is great, personal, I wish you the best ! But be very careful with the trading, I have been burned many times .... DO NOT buy on margin, unless you really know what you are doing, it was nice chatting with you tonight -)
