Fire In My Bones

Many times, I had wanted to fail
Constatntly, you reminded me of reasons not to
I grew up in the mud
You wiped me of all debris

Sucked your placenta, 9 months
It brought me to life, that was enough
Yet you fought by my side through growth, thick and thin
To help me evolve

At the crossroads of my life
Worn out and almost defeated
I have every reason to quit, except you
For if I do I will never connect the dots

Even at breaking point
My mother’s son, I’d always be
My greatest source of inspiration
The reason why my spirit is not broken

This fire in my bones will I quench not
That I forget not the ancient paths you laid
Amidst challenges, setbacks and pressure
I’d never forget to remember, that you are my mother

(Dedicated to my mum, Mrs. Mercy Etim)
