Therapeutic Power Of Music

in #motivation12 hours ago

Music has been known to humankind over the years and have transcended times and eras. On the peripheral, music has been seen as an organised melodious group of sound, which is pleasing to the human ears. However, a lot of people do not know that there are more things to music than what is perceived by the senses. Beyond music as a form of entertainment, it has been proven to deliver a host of many benefits both to the body and the mind, and we shall take a look at them.

Over the years, I have come to realise that music can actually open one up to inspiration and motivation. Personally, there are times that I may come to a point that I need clarity of mind to make decisions and if I just put on a music, it will clear my mind, giving me the inspiration that I need. When you are faced with challenges, the very simple way to gain the determination and the drive to face it is to listen to music. More so, some of these upbeat songs can actually boost one's energy level to keep going. When you go to gyms or see people do some workouts, you will notice that they normally have music playing in the background - this can help to create positive energy and a boost to keep going.

Coming to the emotions, music has been proven to provide emotional healing to an individual. Songs that have strong and motivating lyrics can help one to stay positive even in the midst of negativities. This can also explain why, when you see motivational speakers, sports people, and other successful individuals, they can use music to put themselves in the right emotions before they undertake any critical task. One of my close friends that underwent a very critical surgery and was successful said that in the theatre, the chief surgeon had a very soft music playing in the background while the surgery was going on. This might be his own way of staying focused, clearing his mind, and drawing inspiration.

In addition to this, music can also improve one's cognitive function and memory. This talks about the learning and studying processes. When we were in school, there was this guy that, each time he wants to read or do other activities that require high level brain work, he would be listening to soft music. This because music can improve the brain function as well as enhance the ability to learn. If you take a critical look at people who study with music, you will notice that they normally master the act of multitasking. That is, they evolve to have the ability to do a lot of things at the same time because they have an enhanced brain ability. Even the people who play and master musical instruments; they also have the ability to learn things faster.

Apart from the mind, brain, and emotions, music also does good to the body. I once read somewhere that music can help one to relax, thereby lowering the blood pressure and increasing the overall health of the heart. Additionally, it has also been said that music has the ability to trigger the release of endorphins in the body, which acts as a natural "painkiller," to help one to recover from body pains. So you see, beyond the fact that listening to songs can suit the ears, they can also be beneficial to your physical and mental health.

Away from the therapeutic benefits of music, it also has social benefits that I feel we can touch a bit. It can unite people and even foster peace and harmony. When you attend a musical concert for example, you will see people gather and are united, and they even interact freely. More so, there is this sense of belonging that is created when people share songs together. No wonder this phrase; "music unites the community." When I was in school, I was a member of the choral group. In that group, a lot of people were from many tribes and ethnic groups; Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Ijaw, Igala, Ibibio, etc, but we did things in common. In fact, you may even think that we were related or that we shared a common ancestry, but we simply got united by the power of music. This is part of the benefits that music can offer.
