Quite possibly one of the best sports dramas to date, Gavin O'Connor's Warrior released back in 2011 is below the radar for most.
This movie didn't even earn its budget back, its a flop for sure and its sad that most people probably hasn't heard of it.
As with my other posts, i will avoid spoilers for as much as i can, and will be tagging you guys in advance should there be any.
It's a story about a former marine finally returning home to his alcoholic dad to train for an upcoming MMA tournament. A tournament his brother is participating on as well.
The above given summary gives no justice to the movie whatsoever and i implore you to watch it and here are the reasons why;
#1 It's emotionally compelling
When grown men cry, the world stops
This movie made me cry multiple times, on different scenes, at different times I had to pause the movie a lot. Looking for a movie to release? This one's for you.
#2 It's not shallow
Got dad issues? Oh boy this is going to hit you hard
The bane of sports inspired shows is that its focused more on the sport rather than the people behind. You'd notice the good ones focus on the people, and this surely does more than it's fair share.
It questions family issues more than those punches, past sins rather than kicks and a whole lot of tears than the blood.
It doesn't add issues just for the sake, it has depth and they're real.
#3 The acting is real and raw
Tom Hardy doing what he does best
When you can't imagine another actor take the role you'd know they did one hell of a job. Tom Hardy as the younger brother who ran away, Nick Nolte as the abusive father and Joel Edgerton as the older brother who stayed, these men delivered one for the ages.
The problems they face are real, its not something you can pull out from a script. The emotions seemed so real you'd think you're watching a documentary.
It would be such a shame to miss out on this.
#4 Fights are plentiful and satisfying
Knock outs are common
You might be thinking by now that this movie is an emotional baggage train wreck taking all the screen time with all the family bruhaha going along but it's not, and the 140min running time the show has is more than enough to feature a bit of everything without dragging the plot along with it.
From the amateurish fights to the pro scene, there are fights aplenty.
Sure it's Hollywood-ish, but if you want blood and sweat, just like any good brawl this one's for you.
#5 The movie will leave you a better person
*
despite the seemingly mindless violence, the cliches, this show has heart*
Even if it's just a bit. The powerful act of forgiving out of love, or simply just loving, there's a lot to take in.
Such is the beauty of good movies and why we watch them.
