The return of Alternative Weekend?

in #music2 years ago

#AlternativeWeekend was something @slobberchops and I used to do, but it has been a couple of years since the last post. I think we need to revive it to share some non-mainstream music we enjoy. What you class as 'alternative' may be different to me.

Alternative

I got into Porcupine Tree when a friend got us on the guest list for a gig in Cambridge about 15 years ago. I had not really been aware of them before that. There is so much music that is hardly played on the radio. Since then I have bought a load of their albums and when main man Steven Wilson went solo I followed along. Three of the old band have now got back together and have an album out. I was discussing this with @slobberchops who pointed me at a review that was not too complimentary, but I will be having a listen anyway. This is the latest track they have put out and I like it. Has a great main riff that reminds me of some of their old tracks. The video is just weird.

Not that weird means bad. There is so much more music out there than we have time to check out. I listen to BBC 6music a lot as they play a lot of stuff I would not hear otherwise. Some of it resonates with me. I had it on in the background yesterday when this came on and it took me a while to realise what the song was. People outside the UK may not be aware of The Wurzels who had some novelty hits in the 70s. This cover by Sea Power totally changes the mood.

I also get songs shared with me by friends. Now that most music is online that is easy to do. I check out various bands via Spotify, but that tends to give you 'more of the same'. This came via a friend today and is definitely different. I actually kind of like it even if it is not what I would normally listen to.

Clown Core reminded me a little of John Zorn's Naked City who I discovered many years ago. They mixed up jazz, movie themes, thrash and avant garde.

Rock on and stay alternative.

Sort:

I'd happily join this challenge, but for the start, indeed, need to clear up the basic terms. what is supposed to be labelled #alternative?.. for example, my fave band Radiohead always was considered as 'alternative rock' in 2000-es... it is fucking MAINSTREAM now, by all means. are we supposed to share music that we consider to be some opposite statement to the mainstream... or what?.. @slobberchops.

Radiohead are a great band for this, and one I am a fan of. Go ahead!

oh! a personal pleasure to hear that, as ofc I am biased 😜 on another hand, maybe in the year 2022 its hard to find one who would claim that Radiohead are shit and dont deserve any respect etc etc 😂😂

I will jump on this. Any specific day for posting #alternativeweekend, or any day will suit?..

No rules, post at will!

It is a purely personal 'challenge' and you get to decide what qualifies. It's an opportunity to share some music you think deserves more attention as it may not get played on the radio.

I would still consider Radiohead as alternative even though they have been successful. A lot of their music is quite challenging and they keep evolving.

Thanx Steve, "not get played on the radio" -- a good criteria, no irony attached... thats some solid criteria what the mainstream is, and what it is not (along with the music selected for playing at the malls, haha). I'll be happy to share some of good music finds that were screened thru my personal filters thru years, then.

And avoiding ballads like this,

I definitely can entertain you with a story or two about Radiohead's music. 😎 We have come together a long way since 1998, when I discovered this band.

I got into Radiohead about the same time when OK Computer came out. I see Thom and Jonny have a new band now.

well, since I am located in Russia and you are in UK, this was to be expected 😏 'a new T+J band' is a small, lapidary definition of what's going on... in my opinion since 2005-2006 things started getting worse, when Ed stated he dont feel urgent reasons to stay in the band, Thom released his 'non-solo-album' and started sinking more and more in the electronic stuff. Jonny started getting less busy in the band's albums and paying more and more attention to his soundtracks commissions (I lost count of how many OSTs he has already written...), a little later the drummer began to make his solo albums. All these are distinctive signs, imo.... the members of the group are tired of each other, tired of being united in a band, they are no longer dragging "the whole blanket" in one direction, but pulling its pieces "into their separate nests", etc. etc...

You can't blame them for wanting to do different things. Getting a band to stick together for decades is not easy. What matters is the music they make. I'm sure some people just wanted more songs like Creep.

nope! you are absolutely right. its a 'family' type of relationship.

what matters is the music they make.

...and here is where I am off. it was my 'number one' band for two decades... never wanted myself to get "50 new editions of that c-song", but apparently since 'In Rainbows' LP, I like less and less what they record, where they are going in music (if it's appropriate to talk about any movement in music, at all...)

Great tracks. Loved the Clown Core. It's EDM, meets jazz meets grindcore metal and they actually made it work! That's awesome! I love stuff like that.

Music is supposed to be fun and I like to hear people twisting it into something new.

This is awesome @steevc ! Love the sound of this and will definitely take part. I used to be a big porcupine tree fan, still am! Love Rats Return... super prog!

Actually, I am releasing my own album in just over 2 weeks - I'd love to be able to share some of my own tracks as part of #AlternativeWeekend if that's cool! Has a nostalgic rock/punk vibe with solos and more!:)

You can use the theme for whatever you like. Good luck with the album.

That Rats song is a bit wierd, but even the critics seem to like it. I usually get into PT tunes quick but not this tine. I ran out of music for Alternative Weekend after emptying my brain on the the chain. These days I don't new music give much of a chance... but there may be a few new (old) ones in the tank.

Who cares what the critics like? It's all just opinions and musical tastes are very personal. I'm still up for finding new bands to like. I'll try to find some for more of these posts. I have various obscure CDs I could drag out.
