Those of us who live in the Atlanta, Georgia area--I'm in Gainesville, 60 miles from downtown Atlanta--have gone through many weather challenges. Three years ago an ice storm trapped our neighborhood residents indoors without heat. Decades ago my family escaped safely from two tornadoes sixty days apart. Frightening thunderstorms abound every spring and summer, along with temperatures above 95 degrees accompanied by oppressive humidity.
Yet this week's unwelcome visit from Tropical Storm Irma had no precedent in this area.
The photos of the flattened car and crushed house reflect that even winds of 55 mph can topple trees and power lines.
Fortunately, at our house our only loss was the loss of power for 77 hours. The one large tree that fell fell away from the house!
