Need help!!! What is this thing?

in #nature6 years ago (edited)

First post here Steem fam, and I'm going to crowdsource knowlege here.

I was strolling through my girlfriend's hometown of Yuba City, CA visiting family for the holidays. Not too far away from their house, hanging over like theater prop, was THIS THING.

I took this picture and went back to ask my father-in-law what it was and he said he had no idea.

"Been living in this town my whole life and never seen that before!"

I simply cannot seem to find anything online either. Is it a Dragonfruit? Close, but not sure. My first thought was I'm sure I can upload the picture via Google Images and have their readily-available SkyNet image recognition AI scanner bots do some digging. Hilariously, Google Images came back with simply, "HEY, IT'S A LEAF!"

Well, Google, you're not wrong but... I was hoping to know what...the orange... agghh forget it.

Google also proactively suggested that in the case that I, for kicks, wanted to eat around this orange Bowser shell and consume it's actual leaves, I'd be getting 53% of my daily Vitamin A intake.

No thanks Googs.

Can you ladies and gents help me identify this thing and we can learn about it?

What an interesting looking fruit, I say give it a try!

the inside of it looks like alien guts!

Can you eat the inside? If you can what parts?

I would have to steal one from the neighbor to try! Seems like the green guts.

Did you ever figure out what kind of fruit it was?

That might actually be it! Maybe this guy hasn't matured yet to have the white points? Also, why is the inside of this Kiwano fruit look like blended alien guts!?

Green slime alien guts is exactly what I thought too!

I think This is it :

Its fruit , the kiwano is edible. It is also called metulon, melano, African horned cucumber or horned melon.
