The Indus River, also known as Sindhu, Sinthos and Sindus; is one of the longest rivers in Asia and forms the linchpin of Pakistani water and food supplies. It's a vital waterway for the country and gives a rich history and culture to the nation of Pakistan. One of the worlds earliest civilisations was recorded to have been existing on the sides of the Indus River. The Indus Valley Civilisation contemporaneously existed with the Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilisations of the ancient past. It's importance is highlighted in the very fact that it remains to this day a bone of contention between arch rivals Pakistan and India and has even led to war.
The headwaters of the Indus River lie in the Himalayas, Tibet. The total length of the river is is between 1800 and 2000 miles and the course of this river has changed a great deal over millennia. Back in 1947 when India shut the water flow to the Indus from its base in Kashmir the entire Pakistani nation went into a crises. A crises that wasn't resolved for over 15 years.
