Chrysler Building opens to the public (1930)

The Chrysler building is a large building on the East Side of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. It was opened to the public on this date in 1930 and at the time was the tallest building in the world.

It stands at 1,046 feet. This Art Deco-style skyscraper held the title of the world’s tallest building for about 11 months until the Empire State Building surpassed it. It is currently the sixth-tallest building in the city of New York.

At its opening, there were mixed reviews of the design. Some felt it was unoriginal, while others felt it was modernist and iconic. Living up to its name, the building was designed and built specifically for the car manufacturer, but the company never owned it. Walter P. Chrysler paid for it himself so that his children could inherit it.

Golden Gate Bridge opens (1937)

The Golden Gate Bridge is the infamous suspension bridge of San Francisco. It links San Francisco, California to Marin County, carrying Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait that connects San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

On this date in 1937, it opened to the public. Pedestrians and cyclists were able to utilize it, while cars would have to wait one more day to traverse it. At its open, it was both the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world, spanning 4,200 feet (1,280 m) and being 746 feet (227 m) tall.

It is such an icon, it has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The Frommer’s travel guide describes it as “possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world.”

Barack Obama is first president to visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is a memorial park in the center of Hiroshima, Japan. It is a memorial and dedication to the victims of those who perished when the atomic bomb fell on the city on August 6th, 1945. There were upwards of 140,000 victims, both direct and indirect as a result of the bomb.

On this date in 2016, president (at the time) of the United States Barack Obama visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, making him the first U.S. president to do so. It was a significant event, as the United States were the ones who dropped the bomb on the city. While there, Obama met with Hibakusha, the name given to the surviving victims of the bomb.

There, Obama paid tribute to the victims with a speech. While such a horrific event can never be forgotten, or even forgiven, it was a large step in moving forward in terms between the two countries. Obama
