The Villa

watercolor on paper - private collection - Rome- Italy

A day like many others.
I was painting a picture in my studio when an elderly man, rather distinguished, enters.

He greets me and looks at my paintings carefully.

It remains a long time to look at my watercolors.
After 10 minutes, he shakes my hand and introduces himself.
-Honored to meet you! - I answer.

In short, this gentleman asks me if I could make a watercolor painting as the subject of his old uncle's classical style villa.

I ask him the usual ritual things, how long I had, if he had any photographs of the villa, and above all where the building was.

He replied firmly that he had no photographs of the villa, and that he had a certain urgency.
The villa is located in Rome tells me.

He wanted to make a gift for his uncle's 90th birthday.

-When is your uncle's birthday? -I asked.

In 5 days, he replied.

Damn, I thought to myself.
I have little time, I accept as long as you take me to see the villa in Rome.

We exchanged telephone numbers and arranged for the following day.

The appointment was at the civic level of the villa, in a beautiful area of Rome: on the Appia Antica.

Uncle that morning was not supposed to be at home, but unfortunately he was inside.
I could not take any photographs, I risked being seen, and ending the surprise.

Reasoning above I decided to do the same some photos.

From the openings of the main gate, almost from above, then I went to the back of the villa and from the secondary entrance I took more photos.

The result was photographs with a perspective view of the very long villa. Very far.
With an almost aerial view, because the main gate was located on a small hill.

The photos gave great prominence to the garden with the neoclassical style fountain and the trees around it.

I explained to my client that even using a very long horizontally-sized sheet, the villa could be seen from far away.

No problem! He replied.

in two days I want to pick up the watercolor.

He left me an advance and we said goodbye.
It was the last time I saw that man.

After two days I called him on the phone dozens of times, without having an answer.

I also called him the next day, his uncle's birthday, leaving messages in the answering machine, text messages, watsup.

Total silence.

Several months passed, and in the meantime I had forgotten this watercolor.

One evening, a mother with two beautiful children enters my studio.

The smaller one looks at my watercolor of the villa and shouts: - Mum, grandpa's house! - the lady is surprised and amazed.
-my God the Father's house! -
I explain to her about the problem I had with the client, about her intention to make a gift and that it disappeared overnight.

-My cousin died in a plane crash! - the day before Dad's birthday!- .

The painting is now inside the villa in Rome.

The phone of this deceased person was recovered from the wreckage of a tourist plane.
The lady has become a loyal customer of mine, and the children are always more beautiful and lively.

With love
Armando

Rimane molto tempo a guardare i miei acquarelli.

Accidenti, pensai tra me.

Armando

Wow @armandosodano, what a sorry story, how encouraged the customer was to give that painting of the villa to the grandfather and just happened all that. It is incredible how one day we live and maybe the other does not and when it happens, unfortunately, all our plans and desires also die. :(

With how beautiful the painting was and your client could not see it, in the end the grandfather saw it?

hi @yanes94 yes the painting the grandfather saw it many months later.

Such a touchingly beautiful story. Accepting my job was such a nice thing to do, but when fate stepped in who knew of the twists and turns and how wonderful it would end.

It is with a giving heart that you agreed to make this for this gentleman and I believe everything happens for a reason.

The watercolors is a gorgeous rendition of a beautiful house. I always envied Talent such as yours so, I can also say that I love when people use it to create and give others Joy!

What a strange story... and what a coincidence that the painting found its way home, anyway. Just incredible! 😎

Phenomenal work, Armando!
