Teach me from your wisdom

in #ocd4 years ago

I was deeply touched by this video. It is a short movie with interviews of people who are over 100 years old. How do they see life? What can we learn from them? One of them is still alive, two have passed away.

I always liked to listen to people's stories. I think that the elderly could have some interesting perspectives in regards to the matters of the heart and also about life in general.

I was amazed to see the joy of living in the eyes of these people.

Oh my marriage was absolutely wonderful. Heavenly, heavenly, heavenly. I lived with him from the age of sixteen until he died at the age of seventy.” Tereza Harper

It seems that love is a key ingredient of long living people. I liked how her whole face lighted up when she spoke about her sweetheart, although he is no longer with her. The power of love never ceases to amaze me and I do believe that the quality of our relationships help us long term to live better and happier. I could not imagine growing old alone, without no one to love you, hold you and cuddle with you when you need it the most. It would be a terrible thought to experience a life filled with solitary nights.

The importance of memories is significant. Old people live on memories. When people close to your heart die, all you have left is the memory of them. I also think that we should value experiences, creating beautiful moments with our loved ones, bonding through meaningful conversations away from technology. A walk in the park, a trip, a photo, all of these will add up and matter once we age.

It's always good to listen more than to talk. We do it too little when we are young. But I realize that wisdom comes by listening with your mind and understanding with your heart.

What's the best advice you ever received from an older person? Did it help you to be happy? I would love to know.

One of the best advices I received is from my grandmother: always put yourself first, be independent, dream and take care of your body & mind and seek quality people to surround yourself with. The most touching words she always ended her conversations with me were: do not grow old and alone, solitude is terrible. After I watched her doing that bravely for decades, I can agree with her on that.

Have a blessed day and toodle loo!

Loved the video !

Yeah, it was great to watch and listen to the elderly. I particularly loved the advice from the woman, teaching us the value of love. Thank you for reading!

This is really beautiful!! It IS all about connection, love, community, creation and passion. Soooo much distraction and BS around us - we need to step back and think about what we will be saying when we live to be 100. Few course corrections might be required!!!

Hey! Thank you so much, you totally understood my idea behind this post. It's so easy to get lost behind all of the petty things and forget about the essentials.
I often observe how people chase so many years the wrong things. Status, validation, luxury items. All this running ahead with no idea about real happiness. I see parents giving their children phones just to get some peace of mind when they should enjoy the childhood because it's never going back. I see people swiping on dating apps cheating on their lovers, thinking that there is always the next best thing around the corner, instead of trying to form a meaningful connection. I see people chasing the wrong dreams, pursuing wrong friendships and living day to day like they have an eternity waiting for them. I just thought about all of this while watching this video and I was so humbled to see how the elderly enjoy the little things, are happy for every accomplishment and look at life as it is a gift every second.

I trully believe more of us should take an example from this kind of people and try to improve the way we look at life. We will all leave empty handed from here so we might as well focus on the spiritual. On what really matters. Our illusionary eternity never waited for us from the get go.

I'm commenting on an old post, but better late than never! right?? 😊

That documentary video gave me a lot of hope. I don't think I will live to be 100, but if I do, I am confident that I will have no regrets and little to be ungrateful for. I have loved deeply, given all of myself to others, and have lived by what I believe in. Strip away all the fluff from life and what your left with.. is it worth it? I say yes. I have and still am making beautiful memories.

I am glad I found this post of yours.. I feel like I was recharged a little and am going to go home and tell my wife and my fur child I love them more than yesterday. Heck, I may even talk to the child we lost, Pepper, and all those others that fill my memories.. they'll call me "Crackers". (loved when Emilia said that) cute!

Oh I am so impressed you have read it, I was feeling so humble when seing those old wise people give such excellent advice. Happy old people are a fountain of wisdom.

Telling your family that you love them is never too much, too late, too soon, too often. Love is beautiful❤️

A friend of mine, same age as me (mid 40), gave me some good advice once that really changed how I felt about the inevitable aging of my parents. He said to me that he decided to sit down with both his parents (one at a time). Not a formal sit down and talk, but a conversation when the time felt right and they were together. He said he told them how he felt about them, how he loved and appreciated the support over the years and that he did not want to regret not having a heart felt talk, if something would happen to him or them. He said it was great.. like a bolder lifted from his shoulders. He felt less worry and more at ease knowing his parents realized that some day they would die and that they also had no regrets and were satisfied with their life.

I did the same with my parents a few years ago, and have a much better time knowing I am prepared if they pass before me. I will still be sad, but grateful I know they are satisfied with how their life has been spent.

I am just saying all this for the sake of good conversation. No need to respond to it.

Have a great day!! 😊

What a beautiful thing to do! Very mature! Actually the subject of death scares many people and I think we need a different set of mentality. I look at things as always being uncertain. Life is not certain and we should not fear death, on the contrary, it should motivate us to want to live to the fullest and have the meaningful conversations while people are alive. I think that many parents and children need to have soul to soul, adult to adult conversations, I think in the power of saying the untold and clearing up the air. It is beneficial and mature.

Have a lovely day too! 🍁
