My friends invited me to lunch at the Vietnamese restaurant at Dusit Thani hotel in Bangkok.

I was very lucky to have been invited there as I kept telling myself to visit this hotel before it is closed . To me this hotel has lots of fond memories of friendship and happiness. This hotel was supposed to be closed in April 2018, but it has been postponed till January 2019. In 1970, this hotel was the tallest building in Bangkok with 23 floors. But the record was broken by Chokchai Tower in 1978 with 29 storeys.

The owner of Dusit Thani hotel has formed a partnership with Central Pattana to rebuild a mix complex which includes hotels, condos, shopping malls and offices. This mix project would cost around 37 billion baht. So, we can expect more traffic jam in the center of Bangkok in a few years’ time! I lost count of the numbers of huge shopping malls in Bangkok, lately the trend is to build top-end and luxurious shopping complex.

This hotel’s coffee shop used to be my friends’ meeting place when we came back to Thailand after our college years abroad. We used to hang out here so often that the staff remembered our drinks and the musical band would play our favourite songs. This is a very peaceful and calm place to chill out with friends during the evening. Most other places are not as spacious and this lounge has a good view of the lush green garden.

The interior design is also very warm and cosy with more conservative and traditional overtone which I always find very comforting. I don’t like those metallic design with flashy furniture which are not very friendly. Next year, all these beautiful interior will be demolished and a new extra modern complex will be built on this land. The old will be replaced by the new. My fond memories of good times here will no longer have their physical orientation. Memories of good old days when we were young and carefree are disappearing forever. The future is full of uncertainty and I am not looking forwards to the coming ‘brave new world’.

เราได้รับเชิญไปกินอาหารเวียตนามที่โรงแรมดุสิตธานีกับเพื่อนที่ไม่ได้พบกันมานาน เราดีใจมากเพราะได้ข่าวว่าเขาจะทุบโรงแรมทิ้ง แล้วสร้างโครงการขนาดใหญ่ ที่มีทั้งโรงแรม คอนโด และแหล่งช็อปปิ้งขนาดใหญ่ โชคดีที่เขาเลื่อนการปิดโรงแรมจากเดือนเมษายนที่ผ่านมา เป็นเดือนมกราคม 2019. ดุสิตธานีเป็นโรงแรมที่สูงที่สุดในปี1970 มีทั้งหมด 23 ชั้น แต่ต่อมา ตึกโชคชัยซึ่งมี29 ชั้น กลายเป็นตึกที่สูงที่สุดในปี 1978.

โรงแรมดุสิตธานีเป็นสถานที่นัดพบกับเพื่อนๆ ที่เคยเป็นนักเรียนด้วยกันที่เมืองนอก เราชอบที่นี่มากเพราะมีการออกแบบตกแต่งสถานที่แบบอนุรักษ์นิยม และยังมีสวนขนาดใหญ่ให้นั่งดูในร้านกาแฟด้วย เฟอร์นิเจอร์ก็เรียบง่ายแบบคลาสซิก การจัดสถามที่ทำให้ดูกว้างขวางไม่แออัด ดูโปร่งสบายตา ตอนนั้นทุกคนยังมีเวลาไปสังสรรค์กันเป็นประจำ จนทำให้พนักงานจำได้ว่าพวกเราชอบดื่มอะไร และนักดนตรีก็เล่นเพลงที่พวกเราชอบให้ฟังตลอด ร้านกาแฟที่นี่จึงมีความทรงจำของวันเก่าๆที่แสนรื่นเริงของเรา เมื่อถึงเวลาที่เขาทุบตึกแล้วสร้างห้างหรูมาแทนที่ ความทรงจำก็คงจะค่อยๆเลือนหายไปด้วย ความเป็นอนิจจังมาคอยเตือนสติเรามากขึ้น เหมือนเป็นสัญญาณบางอย่างเกี่ยวกับอนาคต เรายังไม่พร้อมที่จะเผชิญกับอนาคตที่ต้องใช้ความกล้าหาญในการรับมือเลย เรายังคงเก็บความทรงจำของอดีตที่แสนดีไว้ให้นานที่สุด
