Burrum Heads Beach parkrun

in #parkrun3 months ago (edited)

Today parkrun adventure was to Burrum Heads beach parkrun located at Burrum Heads in the Hervey Bay region of Queensland some 3 hours drive north from my home at Redcliffe. The area in basically not commercialized. I drove up on Friday afternoon and slept in my car at a large carpark adjacent to the Burrum River. My car is an SUV and with the rear seats down comfortably fits a single foam comfortable mattress. I had a good night sleep after enjoying dinner at a shelter near the river watching pelicans eagerly greeting fishermen who clean their catch at a fish cleaning shelter and expecting a free feed of fish frames. Several Kangaroos were nearby on Friday afternoon and again at parkrun start this morning. I managed to get a picture of 2 big Roos in mid air bounding past the shelter where the Run Director was delivering her pre parkrun brief. The course is 4.8k on the beach with 200meters of concrete path to the finish line making it one of the few Australian parkruns with a beach section. The Beaches parkrun in Newcastle in the state of New South Wales is the only parkrun in Australian to my knowledge that is run entirely on the beach and naturally the course changes weekly depending on the tide. The Burrum Heads beach is a vast open beach and the region is subject to gigantic tidal movement so when the tide goes out it is way out, so far that its difficult to see the ocean. It is a must do parkrun for and Australian parkrunner

Lucky to snap the 2 big Roos as they passed, RD suggested everyone keep a distance between us and them 🥊🦘

I think your commenting on your own post. You need to reply on a persons comment so they get a notification and see it.

This sounds amazing, what a place! We’ve got two SUVs and both could make camper vans if needed. You can get custom made mattresses for them.

My SUV is a Haval H6. Burrum Heads is a peaceful area suitable for relaxing with a book or casual beach walks and enjoying the sunsets

Nice Kangaroo photo! It looks like you got some great weather too.

I've not done a parkrun that is actually on a beach. It could be hard work if the sand is soft. I did actually run along the beach when we were in Hervey Bay a few years back, but I was alone then. Roos tend not to feature around here, but we do get some small deer.

Because the tide was out, the sand was firm. Twice earlier this year the event was cancelled because of high tides as the water meets the vegetation
