Most of you are familiar with the tortoise and the hare. But have you heard this one?
Having heard of the tortoises victory over the hare, Achillies the fastest runner, decided to put him back into his place. So he went and issued a challenge.
The tortoise was intelligent, and knew Achillies wouldn't rest during the race like the hare. But he quickly came up with a plan, "I will accept, but only if you give me a head start, it matters not how long."
Knowing the tortoises true speed he accepted at once. "Very well. It won't do you any good anyway, but you can have 50 feet."
"Oh but it will" the tortoise said "I can show you with logic. By the time you catch up to the head start, I will have gone a little further right?
Achillies nodded wondering where he was going with this.
"And once you catch up to that , I will have again gone a little further. And when you make it to the third point, I will have gone farther still. So how will you ever catch up to me, if every time you get to the point I was, there's still a little ways to go"?
Achillies pondered the question long and hard before assuming that the tortoise was right and gave up the race.
Unfortunately, the tortoise could never actually win the race either because he could never cross the finish line. Between him and his destination is always a half way point that goes on to infinity - The infinite half way theory.
Nice post. Followed :)
Excellent point, the race could not even begin because the first distance moved could always be cut in half meaning it would be impossible for it to be the first distance moved.
haha yes! Maybe no one ever moves at all, maybe we are always stationary and sensory information comes toward us...lol
