Heading North

in #photography2 years ago

Hello,

Minnesota has had a long winter this year, and it looks like spring is still a ways off. I'm not, personally, fond of the frigid temperatures and snowfall but find that winter offers some beauty.

To celebrate my sister's birthday, my family took a trip to northern Minnesota. This is something I would not have chosen to do on my own. Close quarters and togetherness are things I am not used to any more. Still, I decided to join them and see what there was to photograph in the area.

During the three days we spent in the frigid north, temperatures barely peaked above zero degrees (about -18ºC). Still, I went out snowshoeing daily. The first day out, I took this next photo of my father snowshoeing between the pine trees.

It may come as a surprise to those of you who live in warmer climates to know that it is actually the clear days, not the overcast snowy ones, that tend to be the coldest. Before leaving for home, my sister and I walked down to the frozen lake. The first rays of sunlight made the snowflakes sparkle.

As you can see from the next photo, driving conditions were not ideal. Fortunately, I wasn't driving and the trip was mostly uneventful.

It was nice to be back in Mankato, though I would much prefer to be somewhere warmer.

I am from Hungary, and fortunately/luckily today we did not have cold temperatures, with the exception of the morning, when it was -1 °C. But even that was not that cold, compared to the average February, and today we had 12 °C in the afternoon, which felt like as if we would be in spring or in autumn/fall, instead of winter. But we had a cold record of -35.50 °C in the previous year on 2021.02.12. I cannot stand the cold. I still could not used to the cold climate of my country. And I will be 30 years old on 2022.09.17.

Have a nice day and have a nice weekend.
All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

According to the meteorologists, we should be above freezing during the day this upcoming week. While cold, it has actually been a fairly typical winter in Minnesota. A couple of years ago, I had to walk to the university in temperatures around -40. That was athe air tmperature and, if memory serves, it was not a record for here.

I was fortunate enough to live in sothern Spain for several years and would move back, given the opportunity!

I looked it up, and the articles says that the average winter temperature is 5 °C there, but the temperature can go up to 45 °C in the summer, which is so hot that I cannot even imagine. The current absolute maximum temperature in my country (in Hungary) is 41.9 °C. But I would still gladly and happily live in southern Spain.
