Toy Review: McFarlane Toys Assassin's Creed Edward Kenway's Hidden Blade

After all the previous Star Wars toy reviews, now I will switch to another blockbuster franchise: Assassin's Creed. Basically a game series along a live-action mini-series, one feature film, an upcoming anime series, and other source materials, it became one of the most popular game franchises and one of Ubisoft's flagship series.

Now for the review, I give you Captain Edward James Kenway's Hidden Blade!!! The lead character, Kenway, and his signature weapon appeared in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. The game's story was set in the Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean, and it is the first game to feature a first person perspective when set in the modern world outside the Animus. The game is the second in what was dubbed as the "Kenway trilogy".

The box includes the hidden blade, faux leather arm braces, and the skull buckle Edward Kenway wore on his bandolier.

The design of the blade allows it to adapt to almost any arm size. The hidden blade is attached to the braces via two velcro straps and a small belt near the tip of the blade.

The brace is made from soft plastic molded to look like faux leather. The blade housing is made of hard plastic and the blade itself is also made of soft plastic for safety reasons. Unfortunately, the blade's soft build causes it to bend. The skull buckle is made of soft plastic and has an attached metal fastener behind to make it wearable.

The detail is so impressive that from a distance, you can't tell if it's plastic or not. McFarlane Toys also went through the effort of carving scratch marks indicating long-term use and weathering. The paint finish gives the blade its deserved metallic sheen. The blade is deployed by pressing the skull-shaped button near the Assassin insignia. Above the insignia, just behind it is a safety lock to prevent the blade from any accidental triggers.

Edward Kenway's Hidden Blade costed me $25, but it may be higher in some internet stores like Amazon. This is a must have for any Assassin's Creed fan or cosplayer!
