Behind Story:

Sigale-gale statue is one of heritage from Karo region, North Sumatera.Based on the legend, Sigale gale is a wooden doll made to make King Rahat happy, the king of one of the kingdoms on Samosir Island. The King's wife has passed away, and the King only has a son named Manggale. One day, a neighboring soldier was about to attack, so the King gathered all advisers, including Manggale as warlord. After everything was prepared, then Manggale left to the war with his best soldier.
After fighting, some soldiers returned home. There is no Manggale between them. Manggale died on the battlefield. The king is very sad. A spiritual guru (datu) advised to make a wooden statue whose face was very similar to that of Manggale. Then, the datu held a ritual by blowing on the sordam and playing gondang sabangunan (tradional music instrument of Karo) to summon Manggale’s Spirit. The Manggale spirit was inserted into a statue that resembled that of his face. The statue was transported to the palace by the accompaniment of Sordam and Gondang. The statue can dance alone because Datu has included the spirit of Manggale into it. Every time King Rahat longs for his son, he will do tor-tor dance with the statue. Then, the King gave this statue the name of sigale-gale. Which means, the Gentle,

Suatu hari, Prajurit negeri tetangga hendak menyerang, sehingga Raja mengumpulkan semua penasihat, termasuk Manggale selaku panglima perang. Setelah semua dipersiapkan, maka berangkatlah Manggale bersama prajurit terbaiknya.
Setelah berperang, sebagian prajurit pulang. Tidak ada Manggale di antara mereka. Manggale tewas di medan pertempuran. Raja sangat sedih. Seluruh rakyat ikut manortor setiap Raja melakukannya. Kemudian, Raja memberi patung ini nama sigale-gale. Yang artinya, si Lemah-lembut

When you see the Sigale-gale show in Tuk-tuk, you'll find it literally dancing and everyone will start dance with the statue while traditional music is played. If you are interested to visit this place, I'm really happy to share my experience more in detail. Just ask in the comment :)

Unlike what is said in the legend, where it was played by the spirit who has been called by ritual, it turns out that someone plays at the back of the statue as a puppet. This is just for the sake of this show though. The ritual might still done by some pure tribe, and the statue might move by itself, but obviously it is not for tourist show. Unless you are looking for mystical experience, this puppet show controlled by someone is fun enough for tourist experience.

I'm still a newbie, either in photography and photoshop. Please share your thought about it, I would be very happy to discuss!

Saya masih pemula, baik dalam fotografi maupun photoshop. Jadi, tolong sampaikan pendapat maupun masukan kamu tentang hasil karya saya, saya akan sangat senang membahasnya!

With Love,
