What's up Steemers?
Today I walked in to work and went about Mt day as usual. After walking out the door to go for lunch, I notice this huge moth on the window. He stayed there pretty much all day, so I named him Jerry.
He had such a beautiful pattern on his wings and back, i couldn't resist getting closer. After taking a few pics, I decided to see if I could identify the specific species.
Google to the rescue!
After googling a few different combinations of descriptive words, I found it. It appears to be an Imperial Moth. The species is called Eacles imperialis and they have been historically recorded from New England and Southern Canada. They are generally now found in Great Lakes States and northward into Canada. This species' wingspan can be up to 7 inches!
Let's measure Jerry.
As I did not have a ruler or tape measure handy, I downloaded the trusty ruler app on my iPad and was able to get a measurement of 4 inches! Jerry is a big boy. I've also included a pen for scale.
He decided to chill with me fore the entire work day, so I took the opportunity to get more up close shots of his beautiful camouflage.
Bonus!!
I've included an obligatory selfie with my new friend, Jerry the Imperial Moth. I hope he stays around so I can hang out with him some more tomorrow, but I understand if he leaves. He's probably a busy dude.
