Tallest Free Standing Structure In UK

in #photography7 years ago

Take a trip into West Yorkshire, U.K. and you will surely see this pinnacle of engineering on the landscape.
At 1084 feet tall (330.4 metres), the telecommunications tower at Emley Moor is the tallest free standing structure in the United Kingdom. 20 metres (66 ft) taller than the Shard, in London.

Pumping out a whopping amount of power and covering an area of over 10,000 km², the tower at Emley Moor, dominates the skyline in many miles of each direction and has been providing television and radio services for over 40 years.

Transmissions have been eminating from this behemoth since 1971.

The scale can only be appreciated when up close & all made from a continual, single pouring of concrete.

It does however need an upgrade and a make-over, so to speak. So over the next four years a temporary mast will be constructed alongside, and of equal height in order to assume its duties.

Wow never heard of this I always assumed the tallest structure would be one of the gorgeous historical churches over there. This is very interesting thanks for sharing 👍🏻

Salisbury cathedral has the tallest spire in Britain at 404 feet, this would still dwarf that.

I'd never even heard of this beast, thanks for sharing.

They used to have an annual open day where you could go up (stairs or lift), but i believe this has stopped.
H&S concerns probably.

That just boggles the mind, "At 1084 feet tall". How did they manage to pump concrete that high? Just amazing, simply utterly amazing.

High pressure pumps from the hollow inside i guess.

Its pretty amazing what we can build. Still amazing they can pump concrete that high. I mean straight up pretty much, and wet concrete is not that light.
