Just down South of Austin TX, on FM 1626 lies a taste of Texas you cannot miss. Slo-Pokes BBQ is a museum of American relics disguised as a BBQ Joint. This place has so much random old neato stuff laying around, a bunch of surprises catch my eye every time I go. The owner was a collector of all kinds of odd things Texas and what not, and decided to make his BBQ their home(from what I can tell, hahaha, he may have a lot more stuff). He used to fixe up classic American cars, and there are several of them scattered about the place. It is situated on about an acre of land, and also hosts a stage, beer bar and a lot of outdoor seating. It is a top notch class place, and I invite you all to take a look.
This is where you used to order your meats, but now its an auxiliary smokehouse. If you look at the ceiling of the shed you can see a bunch of old toasters hahahah.
The menu, I usually go for the Taco cuz its got the most bang for your buck.
Que???
They have good cold beer too actually...and they have their bases covered. Shiner, Lonestar and other American and Mexican Pilsners, IPAs, ciders, even that new alcoholic seltzer water.
A side view of the bar area. Benches, picnic table seating, bar stools, and old junk galore
All the old Singer sowing machines, and then there's also a train set surrounding the smoker! My mom has an old foot treadle Singer, so seeing these always makes me a bit sentimental. Plus, some old signs from TX establishments I think be long gone.
The smokehouse. Some pretty legit smoking equipment here, they don't play esse. Ready to crank out some kickin carne! This place has amazing ribs...and on Thursdays they have a Brisket Chili that kicks some serious arse, only to be beaten by my dad!
An old cadillac converted to a bar, or picnic table? This you gotta see.
Hey, its not just a playground for adults! Whoaaaaa! Complete with a Armadillo made of old tires. Its laying on its side to the right on that old cable spool end that's plopped down on a old stump. You might miss it, if you don't look closely.
The Drag Racer collection can get your attention for quite a while.
Some old rides, there are over a half dozen of these old guys hanging out at Slo-Pokes.
The stage, They usually host Blues and Americana stuff, but other types of music like metal and cowpunk like the Hickoids have made appearances. WC Clark, a very influential Austin Blues musician was doing gigs here for a while, and still might be.
Never heard of him? Check him here:
Last but not least the lunch I had today, A hefty brisket Taco. Has a good char, and pretty tender.
Hope you all enjoyed this as much as I enjoy going to Slo-Pokes. It is actually a rather new place, but its run by some genuine Austin people and its so much of the things I liked about Austin before it exploded!
This place looks like fun to explore. Love the old car in the background and tacos sounds good to me!
