Growing up in America I suspect the closest my father ever came to going for a leisurely walk, was when he was on the golf course.
Yes, thankfully things have changed, but Americans have a long way to go to catch up to the Germans in this area. This is a nearby cloister called Maria Eck (Mary's Corner) where you will find Germans coming to go for a walk --often as a family, extended family, or simply as a group of friends.
This is a gasthous where you can eat and drink outside -- another thing I've really come to love about Germany. Although I didn't include photographs, there is a fairly substantial church and also a few spots where you can see the Chiemsee a few miles away. Notice that this cloister dates back to the early 1600s.
Jahrhundert .
In the distance you can see the snow covered peaks of the Austrian alps.
From here you can go on a walk, or you can go on an hours long "Wanderung" ramble [Br.], hike [Am.] all the way to the top of a mountain to the Hochfellnhaus.

Of course you will also encounter plenty of mountain bikers.
Natürlich begegnet man hier auch vielen Mountainbikern.
By the way a relatively famous German clairvoyant (Alois Irlmaier) was born and raised on a farm nearby.
You'll see elderly people here too, even as hikers. The Germans love walking, it's an intregal part of their culture -- like order, cleanliness, and punctuality, it is part of what makes Germany a special place. In America you're apt to see "no trespasing signs" on private property, but in Germany this is extremely rare -- the country is set up so you can walk and hike.
All photos by yours truly @roused except as noted the photo of the Hochfellhaus

Geduld & Glück braucht man.
In welchen Genres bist du so unterwegs? Ist etwas Rock dabei? <3
Upvoted & RESTEEMED :]
Thank you very much Ms Right! Much appreciated.

Great post about Germany and it's hiking culture.
great shot man thanks for sharing
And thank you for stopping by!
amazing pics, hope you've had a great time there :)))
Thanks, always do :-)
I really like how German people love the outdoors. Great people. I actually lived in Hamburg for a year for postgraduate studies.
We went to Berlin one weekend for a university soccer tournament. What I liked most about Berlin is how it has this USSR vibe going, not that I like the Soviet Union or its tradition or dislike it, it was just interesting.
There were all these posters on the subway about revolution and socialism.
:-D That vibe is getting stronger all the time my friend ;-) Why I love nature and small towns. Thanks so much for stopping by and for the resteem!
You're welcome. Where are you from?
Originally from USA, but Germany is home now.
Cool where in Germany? I lived in Hamburg for a year to do postgrad studies.
On the complete opposite side of Germany, right on the border to Austria. I bet you loved Hamburg, it is a beautiful city.
Nice, I went to Bregenz once, for an interview at Wolford. They flew me down there. What do you do?
Excellent post. I enjoyed it.
I really appreciate that kind of positive reinforcement! Thank U :-)
Germany is a beautiful country although I've only seen it in pictures.
When the sun shines it is hard to beat.
I bet. I heard somewhere years ago that it's not illegal to go such hikes in your birthday suite over there. Is that true?
If you're an adult where you live, at your own risk you can search images:
englischer garten nackerte
It is tolerated in some areas -- it is definitely not Kansass
Unfortunately I left my youth behind 40 some years ago. So it is true then that they will let you go hiking bare butt nude over there. I may have to come for a visit one day 😉
Beautiful pictures !
Thank you for stopping by!
Breath of fresh air, nothing like it where I live. Looks very healthy.
Indeed.

This is so very beautiful, guess one of my next destinations will be Bavaria and the Chiemsee area. Thanks for sharing all this beauty with us.
Have a wonderful week, my friend! :)
Thanks so much! Yes when the sun shines it is truly beautiful, but there is always a risk that you can get caught up in a low pressure weather cycle and have a week of rain. Living here is great, because I can take advantage of the beautiful days.
Before I moved here my favorite mountain getaway was Südtirol in Italy. Being on the other side of the Alps, statistically they have many more sunny days than we do on the Northern side of the Alps. I still really love Südtirol, but it is so similar to here that it doesn't seem to make sense to vacation there.
This is one of the spots I really love and is worth checking out some day.
Wishing you a great week too!!
Thank you so much for the info! We love South Tyrol as well and we've been to St. Josef am Kalterersee last Summer and this year we will visit here: Prad am Stilfserjoch
Our great advantage is the camping car, means, if the weather forecast shows it will be raining a week at our destination, we just change it (not the weather, but the destination 😉).
Great blog!
Beautiful post. Great photos and very informative.
I love learning little facts about countries. I was unaware of the German's passion for walking.
Thanks so much for the kind words -- it took me a while to shed my couch potato ways, but yes the Germans take walking to a whole new level.
Lol, I too need to connect with my Eastern European heritage
One of the Language on my Bucket list to understand even if it is just the basics.
Got a cousin there i planned to visit someday when i have enough to spare for flight...Danke
German is surprisingly easy to learn if you just want to speak and be understood. Although, if you don't learn it as a child, it is extremely difficult to speak without making mistakes.
Each noun is masculine, feminine, or neutral, and there is a complicated case system built around each gender. If you get the gender wrong, your mistakes snowballs into a series of mistakes.
There are some rules that help, but it is often contrary to common sense. A "girl" is neutral. A female/woman (Frau) is of course feminine, but if you use the less flattering (Weib), then it is "das Weib" neutral.
But still, I think it is easier to learn that French, Italian, or English. It is actually an impressive language: very clever, efficient, and precise.
Wow!..
Are you a language Professor? I wish am there to be under your study, the way you explained in details is unique.
:-D I'm far from being a professor! Those are just a few quirky things I've noticed. Good thing for you, you speak English. If an English speaker speaks slowly and clearly and avoids idiomatic expressions, he or she can usually get by all over the world ;-)
Oh, thats assuring...Thanks for taking time to acknowledge me @roused i am honored.
Interesting post !!, being as i'm in Tx looking at these pics da bekommt mann heimweh lol ;-)
:-D That's a crack up, if it's any conciliation, it's wet and chilly today!
I love the posts with a great trip around ;)) Thank you for sharing the info plus excellent shots. :)) Up :)))
Thanks so much Margaret! Your blog itself is a beautiful trip around the world :-)
Wandertag! Tolle Bilder, speziell die Bergpanoramen :)
Thanks Stephan, your photos are amazing. Just followed you :-)
