📷 My First Victory in a Photo Contest

Hello! Today I want to share my joy with you. In March last year, we went to one of the places in the north of Russia, to the Yamal Peninsula, to see and photograph the northern nature beyond the Arctic Circle in winter and the life of local indigenous people - the Nenets - who lead a nomadic lifestyle and are engaged in reindeer herding.

This year, the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, a region of Russia where the Yamal Peninsula is located and where the majority of the Nenets live, celebrated its 90th anniversary (since the day of its formation as an administrative unit). In honor of this, the region held a photo contest entitled "90 Moments of Yamal", in which it invited everyone who lives or has been to Yamal and other territories of the region to participate, with the aim of making an exhibition of 90 best photographs depicting modern life in the region for the anniversary.

There were different nominations for ethnographic, industrial and natural photography. The photo contest, of course, was not on a national scale, or even more on an international scale, but a regional one, so that it was not covered too much in the media, but photos of everyone who visited Yamal were accepted there, including foreigners (and some foreigners who visited the peninsula even took part in it).

And it so happened that one of my photos (the very first one in this post) took 2nd place in the "Another Look" nomination, and in addition to it, 6 more of my photos were included in the number of 90 photographs selected for the final exhibition based on the results of the contest! I am among the winners of the photography contest, wow!

I am very happy about this and invite you to share my little success with me :) Without pretending to be a master in photography, and considering that the competition was not as great as it happens in serious international photography contests, it is still very pleasant to be a winner, especially since this is the first more or less serious real-life competition in which I participated, and even more so I took one of the prizes.

Now the exhibition "90 Moments of Yamal" is located in the Shemanovsky Yamalo-Nenets Regional Museum and Exhibition Complex in the city of Salekhard, the capital of the region, and later it will travel to the cities and villages of the region.

Since, due to the situation with Covid-19, the museum decided not to organise an open to the public ceremony of awarding the winners and the opening of the exhibition, and not to invite the winners to attend it, as it was planned, a couple of weeks ago the opening ceremony of the exhibition and awarding took place in absentia and with minimal public presence. Therefore, we made a little bit sad decision for ourselves not to fly to Salekhard as ordinary visitors to wander around the exhibition and admire our works, printed and hanging on the wall in the museum - after all, we need to fly to Salekhard by plane, and it costs a lot, especially on two people.

Speaking of two people, I mean myself and @kibela, who also took part in the contest, also took one of the prizes and several of her photos, in addition to the prize one, also were chosen for the final exhibition — perhaps she will also write about this and show you her photos :)

Fortunately, our friend, who lured us to visit Yamal last year (and, by the way, several of her works are also among those selected for the exhibition), has some friends in Salekhard, one of whom visited the exhibition and took some photos of the exposition with our photos. Below you can see a photo with the logo of the competition and the beginning of the exhibition at the museum (photo with logo and all the photos below were taken by Igor Utkin, who visited the exhibition, for which many thanks to him).

Well, here are just a few photos that he took on his phone, with my works hanging on the walls :) This is not something super-interesting, but I was pleased to see it :)

Also, the museum made a virtual exhibition in addition, where you can look at all the 90 best works with signatures and titles — however, everything is in Russian (in the English version of the museum website there are only a few pages with contacts), but if you are interested in looking at photos reflecting the modern and everyday life of one of the regions of the Far North, then the Google translator built into a browser like Google Chrome will probably help make it more or less convenient :)
