A tour through the Windsor Castle

If you ever wonder if a visit to the Windsor Castle is worth it when you are in London, this might help you.

Windsor Castle is an actual functional royal residence located in the county of Berkshire, about 32 kilometers west of central London. It is notable for being the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and has been one of the residences of the British monarchs for over 900 years.

You might remember it from the royal coronation concert of the brand new King of England. Either you support or not the Crown, you can’t deny that this castle is really important for history and it’ really cool to be in a building that has been around a thousand years and it’s still in great shape.

Sadly, you can’t take pictures inside the buildings, but the outside is really impressive too.

To get there from central London you need to take a couple of trains. We got to Paddington Station and took a GWR train to Slough and then a smaller train to Winsor. The journey is easy, and it cost us around 11 pounds per person to get there.

As always I would recommend to get your tickets in advance to avoid the queues. We got ours from the London Pass and you just go straight inside.

Once you are inside, you will be greeted by the Round Tower, a massive construction taken out straight of a fairy tale. You walk around the tower and you can visit the State Apartments. There you can see a bunch of rooms where the royalty hosts official state visits from time to time.

There are lots of relics and presents from all over the world, sadly we couldn’t take any pictures from that, but now you know.

After that, you might want to go to the St. George Chapel, a church that hosted many royal weddings, ceremonies and the actual place where the remains of the queen rest. We just took pictures from the main entrance and the side of the chapel. From the inside it’s a lot like the Westminster Abbey but smaller and prettier. The stained glass windows are spectacular.

You can hang out inside the castle and there’s a cafe somewhere. A quick visit could take you 2 hours, but you can easily get lost and stay more than 3 ½ hours.

Once you are done, you can explore the town, a really cute town with lots of shops and restaurants. We were in a hurry, we had tickets for the Shard, so we didn’t stay there longer.

We started our journey back to the city from the train station waiting for this little train that took us to the main train line.

Over all we enjoyed the Castle and personally I think it was one of the highlights of our trip to London. So, we for sure recommend it.
