In the last decade, the number of drones used in the most diverse tasks, both recreational and industrial, has proliferated, but drones have the problem of autonomy since with a charge their autonomy is barely an hour in commercial drones, which is really little for any task we want to undertake.

En la última década ha proliferado el número de drones utilizados en las tareas más variopintas tanto lúdicas como industriales, pero los drones tienen el problema de la autonomía ya que con una carga su autonomía apenas es de una hora en los drones comerciales, lo cual es realmente poco para cualquier tarea que queramos emprender.

But now a team of scientists from the University of Southern Denmark have developed a completely autonomous drone capable of self-recharging using high-voltage lines, which gives it virtually unlimited autonomy that will allow it to perform endless tasks without having to land to refuel.

Pero ahora un equipo de científicos de la Universidad del Sur de Dinamarca han desarrollado un dron completamente autónomo capaz de auto-recargarse utilizando las líneas de alta tensión, lo que virtualmente le confiere una autonomía ilimitada que le permitirá realizar un sinfín de tareas sin tener que aterrizar para repostar.

The secret to this technology lies in the drone's ability to locate power lines, approach them, and engage with a passively actuated grappling mechanism that holds the power line cable while the drone "lands" and then a control circuit adjusts the magnetic field giving the drone the necessary grip.

El secreto de esta tecnología reside en la capacidad del dron de localizar las líneas de alta tensión, acercarse a ellas y engancharse con un mecanismo de agarre accionado pasivamente que sujeta el cable de la línea de alta tensión mientras el dron "aterriza" y acto seguido un circuito de control ajusta el campo magnético dándole al dron la sujeción necesaria.

Once the drone is secured to the power line, it begins recharging its battery, all autonomously. Initially, this system was developed to carry out maintenance tasks on high-voltage power lines more efficiently because the drones are always in the vicinity of the power lines.

Una vez asegurado el dron a la linea eléctrica comienza la recarga de su batería todo ello de forma autónoma. En un principio este sistema se desarrolló para realizar las tareas de mantenimiento de las líneas eléctricas de alta tensión de manera más eficiente por estar los drones siempre en los alrededores del tendido eléctrico.

When the navigation system software detects that the battery is running low, the drone uses its built-in camera and radar to locate the nearest high-voltage line and hook onto it from below to recharge its battery. Once recharging is complete, the drone releases from the cable and continues with its tasks.

Cuando el software del sistema de navegación detecta que la batería se está agotando, el dron utiliza la cámara y el radar que lleva incorporados para localizar la línea de alta tensión más cercana y engancharse a ella desde abajo para proceder a la recarga de su batería, una vez terminada la recarga el dron se suelta del cable y prosigue con sus tareas.

Far from being just a project, the system has already been evaluated outdoors with three-phase high voltage lines, where the drone carried out all types of landing, recharging and take-off tests for several hours, all without the need for human intervention. But more tests still need to be done in adverse climatic situations and in more remote locations.

Lejos de ser solo un proyecto, el sistema ya ha sido evaluado al aire libre con líneas de alta tensión de tres fases, donde el dron realizó todo tipo de pruebas de aterrizaje, recarga y despegue durante varias horas todo ello sin la necesidad de intervención humana pero aún han de hacerse más pruebas en situaciones climáticas adversos y en lugares más remotos.
