Arun's LNG Regasification Terminal Keeps Aceh Alight

PT Pertamina Gas (Pertagas), through its subsidiary PT Perta Arun Gas (PAG), manages the LNG storage and regasification infrastructure in Arun, Lhokseumawe, Aceh. Previously this was the facility that turned natural gas into LNG and then exported to various countries, including Japan and South Korea.

With the waning supply from gas fields, Arun LNG Plant ceased its activity after 37 years of operation. The last LNG cargo was exported on October 15, 2014. As a source of income in Aceh, Arun LNG Plant’s cessation has had a major impact on the economy of Aceh. Therefore the government then initiated the revitalization project of Arun Refinery, converting LNG Production Plant into LNG Storage & Regasification Terminal, the first of its kind in the world.

Arun's LNG Storage & Regasification Terminal has now converted its function into an LNG converter facility to natural gas connected to Arun-Belawan open access gas pipeline that belongs to Pertagas. "Now Arun LNG Regasification Terminal is able to meet the gas demand for industry and electricity in Aceh and North Sumatra" said PAG President Director Teuku Khaidir, upon receiving a visit from a group of national media journalists from Jakarta.

Although LNG regasification volume is not as big as that of the old refinery, Arun Regasification Terminal is now able to process up to 405 MMSCFD of LNG into natural gas. "This is a very important role as gas supply from Arun Refinery will keep Aceh alight and it brings positive impact on the stability of Aceh's economy," said Khaidir.

In the future, Arun LNG Regasification Terminal will continue to be developed. Currently there are three simultaneous projects, namely the revitalization of LNG Hub's liquid natural gas terminal, the construction of condensate terminals and LPG tanks.
